Washburn Soccer hosts Fort Hays and Nebraska-Kearney this weekend

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods Soccer team is set to host two matches this weekend and begin MIAA play on Sunday.

Match Information - Week 4

  • The Ichabod will face the Fort Hays State Tigers on Friday, Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. 
  • Nebraska-Kearney will come to town to play Washburn on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. 
  • Sunday's match begins conference play around the league.
     
Last Week
  • The Ichabods split their two game schedule last week.
  • Paige Swanson scored the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Nebraska-Kearney on Sept. 14.
  • The Ichabods outshot the Lopers 8-6.
  • The Washburn offense struggled against Emporia State on Sept. 16 and fell 3-0 to the Hornets.
  • ESU outshot WU 18-5 and also led in shots on goal 6-1.
     
Some Real Kickers
  • Paige Swanson added her name to the team scorers list after her goal against Nebraska-Kearney. The senior launched a header shot into the back of the net for her first goal of the season in the 10th minute against the Lopers. 
  • Freshman Josie Rimmer had a break out game against William Jewell on Sept. 6 as she scored two goals in the match. She leads the team in goals scored. 
  • Rimmer has also taken 13 shots, eight of which have been on goal, for a SOG percentage of .615. 
  • Tera Lynch leads the team in assists with four
  • Through six games, Lynch has already surpassed her assist total from 2017 of three.
  • Kelsi Smith has recorded two assists.
     
'Bods and Ends
  • Swanson's goal against Nebraska-Kearney was her 10th career goal.
  • The shutout loss to Emporia State was the first time this season Washburn has been held scoreless.
  • Through six games, six different Ichabod players have scored at least one goal. 
  • Likewise for assists, six players have recorded at least one assist. The team has totaled 10 assists on the season.
  • Washburn is 3-1-2 against Nebraska-Kearney at home.
  • The Ichabods are split in the home series against the Tigers. The record stands at an even 3-3 when playing in Topeka.
     
Scouting the Opponents

Fort Hays State

Series history: The Tigers hold the series advantage over the Ichabods since their first meeting in 2011. Fort Hays leads 7-4-1 with its most recent victory coming in double overtime with the score 1-0 last October.

Scouting report: Fort Hays was picked fourth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll after reaching the semifinals of the conference tournament last season. The Tigers have started their 2018 campaign 2-2-2 and have played lengthy matches as three of the six games have gone to extra time. The team is coming off a 1-0 overtime victory against Nebraska-Kearney.

The Tigers are led in scoring by Chloe Montano. She has three goals and one assist. Cailey Perkins and Vianei Sanchez have netted two goals apiece with Perkins recording two assists. Dishing out three assists so far this season, Nikita Woods leads the team.

In the net, Megan Kneefel has put in 582 minutes and allowed eight goals on 76 shots. She has also grabbed 35 saves for a save percentage of .814.

Nebraska-Kearney
Series history: The Ichabods lead the series between Washburn and Nebraska-Kearney by the record of 6-2-3. Washburn has won the past four consecutive matches, three of which have been shutouts. The Ichabods faced the Lopers earlier this season and won 1-0.

Scouting report: Nebraska-Kearney has started the new season with a 2-4 record after dropping a pair of 1-0 decisions last week.

Senior Ciera Clark leads the Lopers in goals, netting two so far this season. Tori Weber and Maddie Love have each scored one goal. Two assists have been made this season split between Kassidy Kirsch and Molly Willis.

Allie Prososki has spent the majority of the time in net for Nebraska-Kearney. Through 360 minutes, she has faced 40 shots and made 18 saves while allowing four goals. Also spending time in goal, Emily Thuss has played 135 minutes and made three saves on 11 shots with two goals allowed.
