Washburn women's tennis set to open spring slate

First serve … 

  • The Washburn Ichabods open the 2019 spring season on the road for a pair of matches held in Springfield, Mo. at the Cooper Tennis Complex.
  • The Ichabods take on the 22nd-ranked Cameron Aggies on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 1 p.m.
  • The following day, the Ichabods will face Drury at 9 a.m.

Fall season recap …

  • The doubles team of Logan Morrissey and Alexis Czapinski dominated the fall season for Washburn after earning all-American status at the end of the 2018 season.
  • The pair finished 8-2 and won the ITA Central Region Championship title and went on to place third at the ITA National Cup Tournament.
  • Jacqueline Engelbrecht also had an impressive run at the Regional Tournament in the singles competition as she won four matches to reach the semifinal round. She finished the fall with a record of 5-2.
  • In her first Washburn debut, Maria Soler Valverde went 6-2 in singles action.

Ichabods in the rankings …

  • As a team, the Ichabods are ranked No. 6 in the Central Region.
  • Reflecting their finish at the ITA National Cup, Morrissey and Czapinski will begin the season as the third-ranked doubles team in all of Division II.
  • Additionally, the duo also holds down the top ranking in the Central Region. 
  • Individually, Engelbrecht is ranked fouth in the region and 28th in the nation.
  • Czapinski also joins the region's top-10 list at No. 9 in women's singles.
  • Washburn was picked fourth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll.

Scouting the opposition ...

Cameron Aggies

  • Cameron wrapped up the 2017-18 season with a record of 16-8 and an appearance in the NCAA Regional Tournament.
  • The team heads into the spring schedule ranked 22nd in the nation and third in the South Central Region.
  • Head coach Josh Cobble has led the Aggies since January of 2017. During his tenure, the women's team has gone 29-19 overall.
  • The Ichabods have struggled when facing the Aggies and trail in the series 1-10.

Drury Panthers

  • Drury finished the 2017-18 campaign 19-2 and reached the NCAA National Round of 16.
  • Although the Panthers lost two seniors to graduation, the team returns six players from last season.
  • Coach Jarrod Smith is in his 14th year as the women's head coach and holds a 261-60 record while leading the team to eight conference championships and 13 National Tournament appearances.
  • The Ichabods are 3-9 all-time against the Panthers.

New faces …

  • The team welcomed three newcomers for the 2018-19 season.
  • Maria Soler Valverde started out her career with the Ichabods on a high note as she advanced to the women's Fligh B singles championship match at the ITA Central Regional Tournament. She finished the season 6-2 in singles and was 4-3 in doubles.
  • Svea Crohn split her record in singles going 3-3  and was 3-2 doubles competition.
  • Kinsey Fields also had a singles record of 3-3 and went 2-1 with doubles partner Soler Valverde.

Coach Lance Lysaught

  • is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Washburn men's and women's tennis teams.
  • has coached the Washburn women to a 37-44 overall record and is 16-22 in MIAA matches.
  • led the Ichabod men to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal round in 2018, the first time the program had ever advanced beyond the national round of 16.
  • was tabbed to start up the men's and women's tennis programs at Ottawa University in 2012 where he was the head coach for two seasons.
  • is a former Washburn student-athlete who played tennis for the Ichabods from 1987-91.
  • was a two-time District 10 singles champion and an NAIA national qualifier in both singles and doubles over his tenure as a player.
