First Serve …
- The Washburn Ichabod women's tennis team (3-0) is set for another busy weekend on the road with a pair of matches in Texas.
- The first match of the weekend will be against two undefeated teams as the Ichabods take on Southern Arkansas (3-0) on Friday, Feb. 15 at Frank Seale Middle School in Midlothian, Texas. The match is scheduled to commence at 4 p.m.
- The following morning, Washburn is set to face Dallas Baptist (2-1) at Keist Park in Dallas, Texas. First serve will be at 11 a.m.
Last Week …
- The Ichabods won their third-straight match last week with a 5-2 road victory over Oklahoma Baptist.
- Washburn made quite the statement by making short order of its opponents and sweeping the doubles competition and jumping out to a 1-0 lead.
- Alexis Czapinski added another point for the Ichabods with her victory at No. 2 singles, but the Bison answered by winning the next two matches to tie it up at 2-2.
- The second half of the Ichabods order quickly took control of the dual and sealed the team win.
- Svea Crohn continued her winning ways at No. 5 with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph to improve to 3-0.
- Madison Lysaught clinched the team dual victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win.
- Logan Morrissey added the final point for Washburn in a three set tiebreaker, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4).
Scouting the Opposition ...
Southern Arkansas Muleriders
- Southern Arkansas is in its first season since 2011-12 as both the men's and women's tennis programs were revived for the 2018-19 campaign.
- Greg Owen was tabbed as the head coach to restart both programs. Prior to joining SAU, Owen was the head coach at Seward Community College for two full successful seasons and coached at Midlothian High School (Texas) for six years.
- The Muleriders entered the spring season ranked fourth in the Great American Conference.
- The team is off to a 3-0 start and have allowed just two points to their opponents over those three matches (6-1, 6-1, 7-0).
- This will be the first meeting between the two teams.
Dallas Baptist Patriots
- Dallas Baptist is coming off its fourth NCCAA National Championship and finished the 2017-18 season with an impressive 19-9 record.
- Wade Morgan enters his second season as the head coach of both the men's and women's teams at DBU. He was named Coach of the Year after leading his team to a National title.
- The Patriots entered the season ranked 10th in the South Central Region.
- The team is 2-1 this season and most recently swept McMurry (Division III), 7-0.
- Washburn won the first-ever meeting between the two teams back in 2007, but has dropped the last four straight matches and Dallas Baptist leads the all-time series 4-1.
Ichabods in the Rankings …
- As a team, the Ichabods are ranked No. 6 in the Central Region.
- Reflecting their finish at the ITA National Cup, Morrissey and Czapinski will begin the season as the third-ranked doubles team in all of Division II.
- Additionally, the duo also holds down the top ranking in the Central Region.
- Individually, Engelbrecht is ranked fouth in the region and 28th in the nation.
- Czapinski also joins the region's top-10 list at No. 9 in women's singles.
- Washburn was picked fourth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll.
'Bods and Ends …
- Czapinski was recognized for her efforts against Oklahoma Baptist and was named the MIAA Women's Tennis Co-Athlete of the Week on Feb. 11. This became the fourth time she has won the award after earning the honor three times last season.
- Czapinski and doubles partner Morrissey notched their 10th victory of the season and improve to 10-3 overall.
- Morrissey reached her 50th career win in doubles.
- Lance Lysaught won his 40th match as the women's head coach with the victory over Oklahoma Baptist.
Coach Lance Lysaught …
- is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Washburn men's and women's tennis teams.
- has coached the Washburn women to a 40-44 overall record and is 16-22 in MIAA matches.
- led the Ichabod men to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal round in 2018, the first time the program had ever advanced beyond the national round of 16.
- was tabbed to start up the men's and women's tennis programs at Ottawa University in 2012 where he was the head coach for two seasons.
- is a former Washburn student-athlete who played tennis for the Ichabods from 1987-91.
- was a two-time District 10 singles champion and an NAIA national qualifier in both singles and doubles over his tenure as a player.
