No. 5 Washburn to conclude conference play against Lions, Bearcats

First Serve … 

  • The No. 5 Washburn women's tennis team (18-1, 7-0 MIAA) looks to finish strong in the final two MIAA matches of the regular season this weekend as the Ichabods lead in the conference standings by one match.
  • Washburn is set to take on Lindenwood and No. 28 Southwest Baptist for the final time as MIAA foes in the regular season as both teams are leaving the MIAA for the Great Lakes Valley Conference next season.
  • The Ichabods travel to St. Charles, Mo., to play Lindenwood (0-12, 0-4 MIAA) on Friday, April 12 at 3 p.m.
  • The next day, Washburn will face off against No. 28 Southwest Baptist (9-5, 5-2 MIAA) in Bolivar, Mo. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.


Last Time Out …

  • Washburn won four matches last week, including two huge victories against nationally ranked conference opponents.
  • The Ichabods won at every doubles and singles position in the 7-0 sweep of William Jewell (6-10) on April 2.
  • On April 5, Washburn defeated reigning MIAA Champions No. 44 Northeastern State (7-7, 5-2 MIAA) for the first time in program history.
  • After winning the doubles point, Washburn's bottom half of the singles lineup came through with victories to secure the 4-3 team win.
  • Madison Lysaught clinched the match at No. 6 singles in a three set comeback battle, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.
  • The Ichabods completed a senior day 4-3 come from behind win over No. 7 Central Oklahoma (12-3, 6-1 MIAA) on April 6.
  • Washburn lost the doubles point for just the second time this season, but recovered in singles play with victories at the No. 2, 4, 5, and 6 positions. 
  • After dropping the first set, Maria Soler Valverde clinched the match at No. 4 singles, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
  • The Ichabods capped off their victorious week with a 6-1 win at Rockhurst (10-10) on April 7.
  • Soler Valverde clinched the match again, this time in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.


Scouting the Opposition …

Lindenwood Lions

  • The Lions went 4-12 (3-6 MIAA) last season.
  • In the MIAA Coaches Preseason Poll, Lindenwood was picked seventh.
  • Lindenwood is looking for its first victory of the season and is currently 0-12 (0-4 MIAA).
  • These two teams have met six times since 2012 and have split the series, 3-3. The Ichabods have won the last two matches.


Southwest Baptist Bearcats

  • The Southwest Baptist Bearcats finished out the 2017-18 season with a record of 14-4 (7-2 MIAA) and reached the first round of the NCAA Central Regional Championships.
  • Heading into the new season, the Bearcats were tabbed third in both the Central Region and in the MIAA Coaches Preseason Poll.
  • SBU is currently 9-5 and is 5-2 in MIAA matches.
  • The Bearcats are led by Fanni Varga in her first official full season as the head coach.
  • The doubles team of Klara Vickov and Jill Van Den Dungen return after receiving All-American honors last season.
  • Washburn leads the all-time series, 22-8. After claiming the first 22 victories, the Ichabods have lost eight in a row.


Ichabods in the Rankings …

  • Washburn moved back up to No. 5 in Division II in the latest ITA national rankings (April 10).
  • Two Ichabods are ranked in the top-20 singles nationally.
  • Czapinski moved up one slot from No. 3 to now the second-best singles player in the nation.
  • Also ranked individually, Jacqueline Engelbrecht checks in at No. 25 and Soler Valverde moved up to No. 40.
  • In doubles, Czapinski and Logan Morrissey are now rankd third.
  • As a team, the Ichabods are ranked No. 6 in the Central Region.
  • Czapinski/Morrissey hold down the top doubles ranking in the Central Region. 
  • Individually, Engelbrecht is ranked fouth in the region and 28th in the nation.
  • Czapinski also joins the region's top-10 list at No. 9 in women's singles.
  • Washburn was picked fourth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll.


'Bods and ends …

  • Washburn is atop the conference standings at 7-0. Central Oklahoma is in second with a record of 6-1 in MIAA matches.
  • The Ichabods are 4-0 against ranked opponents this season (#22 Cameron, #26 Augustana, #44 Northeastern State, #7 Central Oklahoma).
  • Alexis Czapinski was named the MIAA Women's Tennis Co-Athlete of the Week on April 8. She has won the weekly conference honor five times this season and eight in her career.
  • She leads the team with an 18-1 record in dual action and is 22-3 overall this season.
  • Soler Valverde won her 14th-straight completed singles match at the No. 4 slot. She is undefeated since moving to No. 4 (14-0) and has a total singles record of 21-4.
  • Svea Crohn has won her last seven matches at No. 5 singles. 
  • Five of the six regular starting singles players have accumulated 15 or more wins between the fall and spring seasons.
  • The Ichabods' current 13 match winning streak is the longest since the 2006-07 season when Washburn won 18 in a row. 


Coach Lance Lysaught

  • is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Washburn men's and women's tennis teams.
  • has coached the Washburn women to a 55-45 overall record and is 21-22 in MIAA matches.
  • is 0-6 all-time against SBU and 3-1 against LWU.
  • led the Ichabod men to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal round in 2018, the first time the program had ever advanced beyond the national round of 16.
  • was tabbed to start up the men's and women's tennis programs at Ottawa University in 2012 where he was the head coach for two seasons.
  • is a former Washburn student-athlete who played tennis for the Ichabods from 1987-91.
  • was a two-time District 10 singles champion and an NAIA national qualifier in both singles and doubles over his tenure as a player.
