Women's Tennis

No. 5 Washburn to conclude regular season on the road

First Serve … 

  • The No. 5 Washburn women's tennis team (20-1, 9-0 MIAA) looks to finish the regular season on a strong note with road matches against No. 23 Midwestern State and Southeastern Oklahoma State.
  • The Ichabods will take on No. 23 Midwestern State (14-5, 3-1 LSC) on Friday, April 19. The match in Wichita Falls, Texas is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
  • Washburn will close out the regular season the following day (Saturday, April 20) at regional opponent Southeastern Oklahoma State (1-8, 1-4 GAC) beginning at 1 p.m. in Durant, Okla.


Last Time Out …

  • Washburn capped off a perfect conference record last week and claimed the MIAA regular season title with victories over Lindenwood and No. 28 Southwest Baptist.
  • On April 12, the Ichabods completed their sixth sweep of the season with a 7-0 victory against Lindenwood (0-13, 0-5 MIAA).
  • Washburn took a quick lead in the dual after winning the doubles point. 
  • Alexis Czapinski and Logan Morrissey, recorded a quick 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles. 
  • Jacqueline Engelbrecht and Svea Crohn added a 6-2 win at court No. 2. 
  • The Ichabods claimed the No. 3 doubles match by way of a forfeit from Lindenwood.
  • The Lions also forfeited the No. 6 singles match, giving the Ichabods a 2-0 lead to start the singles portion of the dual.  
  • Engelbrecht clinched the victory for Washburn at the top of the order, 6-2, 6-1. 
  • Czapinski, Maria Soler Valverde, Morrissey, and Crohn all added to their individual win total with straight set victories. 
  • On April 13, the Ichabods won the MIAA regular season title outright with a 4-3 victory over No. 28 Southwest Baptist (9-6, 5-3 MIAA).
  • The Ichabods earned the doubles point in dramatic fashion. After the Bearcats won the No. 3 match, Engelbrecht and Crohn came back strong and blanked their opponents 6-0 at No. 2 doubles. 
  • The point would be decided in a battle at court No. 1 between Czapinski / Morrissey, the third-ranked duo in Division II, and sixth-ranked Jill Van Den Dungen / Klara Vickov. It came down to a tiebreaker that Czapinski and Morrisey claimed, 7-6 (7-3).
  • The Bearcats came out strong in the singles competition, grabbing victories at the No. 1 and 3 positions. 
  • Trailing 2-1, Washburn answered with wins at the next three matches to clinch the dual. 
  • Czapinski sparked the winning charge with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles to tie up the match. 
  • Crohn followed with a 6-2, 6-1 decision at the fifth slot. 
  • Soler Valverde sealed the win with a dominant performance at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-1.


Scouting the Opposition …

Midwestern State Mustangs

  • Midwestern State went 19-7 (5-1 LSC) last season and won the Lone Star Conference title and the South Central Regional to advance to the first round of the NCAA National Tournament.
  • MSU was picked second in the South Central regional poll to start the season.
  • They are currently ranked 23rd in Division II with a record of 14-5 (3-1 LSC). They've also won their past five straight matches.
  • The Mustangs lead the all-time series, 8-3, and are on a five match winning streak.

Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm

  • Southeastern Oklahoma State finished 11-12 (5-1 GAC) last season.
  • The team was picked 10th in the Central Region rankings at the beginning of the season.
  • The Savage Storm has struggled this season and currently hold just a 1-8 (1-4 GAC) record.
  • The two teams have only met twice and hold a split record. The Savage Storm won the last match in 2013, 6-3.


Ichabods in the Rankings …

  • Washburn are ranked No. 5 for the second consecutive week (April 17).
  • Two Ichabods are ranked in the top-20 singles nationally.
  • Czapinski is still the second-ranked singles player in the nation while Engelbrecht moved up five spots to No. 20.
  • Soler Valverde checked in at No. 47 on the list.
  • In doubles, Czapinski and Morrissey moved up one place to No. 2.
  • The first edition of the NCAA regional rankings was released April 17th, with the Ichabods holding down the top place in the Central Region.
  • Washburn was picked fourth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll.


'Bods and ends …

  • Washburn earned its seventh MIAA title in program history.
  • The Ichabods last won a title in 2012 when they were co-champions and they were the outright regular season champions in 2011. 
  • It became the fifth time in program history the Ichabods completed the season with a perfect MIAA record and the first time since 2008-09 (8-0).
  • Washburn's winning streak is now up to 15 matches, their longest since 2006-07 when the Ichabods won 18 in a row.
  • The Ichabods' lone loss of the season was to Division I Air Force Academy.
  • Washburn is 5-0 when facing Division II nationally ranked opponents (No. 22 Cameron, No. 26 Augustana, No. 44 Northeastern State, No. 7 Central Oklahoma, No. 28 Southwest Baptist).
  • Soler Valverde has won her last 16 completed matches at No. 4 singles and holds a combined record of 23-4 between the fall and spring seasons.
  • Czapinski posted her 20th victory at No. 2 singles and is an impressive 20-1 this spring.


Coach Lance Lysaught

  • is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Washburn men's and women's tennis teams.
  • has coached the Washburn women to a 57-45 overall record and is 23-22 in MIAA matches.
  • led the Ichabod men to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal round in 2018, the first time the program had ever advanced beyond the national round of 16.
  • was tabbed to start up the men's and women's tennis programs at Ottawa University in 2012 where he was the head coach for two seasons.
  • is a former Washburn student-athlete who played tennis for the Ichabods from 1987-91.
  • was a two-time District 10 singles champion and an NAIA national qualifier in both singles and doubles over his tenure as a player.
