No. 7 Washburn opens MIAA Tournament with Missouri Western on Friday

First Serve … 

  • With a regular season conference title already in hand, the No. 7 Washburn women's tennis team (21-2, 9-0 MIAA) looks to add an MIAA Tournament Championship title to their collection this weekend.
  • As the tournament's top seed, Washburn will take on the eight seed Missouri Western in the quarterfinal match on Friday, April 26 at 9 a.m.
  • The three day championship tournament will be held at the OKC Tennis Center in Oklahoma City.


Last Time Out …

  • Washburn closed out the regular season by splitting the final two matches and finishing with a record of 21-2.
  • The Ichabods lost their first Division II match of the season against No. 23 Midwestern State (16-5), falling 4-3 on April 19.
  • The Ichabods won the doubles point to take an early lead. Maria Soler Valverde and Kinsey Fields posted a quick 6-1 victory on court three to get things started. 
  • After the Mustangs answered with a win of their own at No. 2 doubles, Alexis Czapinski and Logan Morrissey clinched the doubles point at the top flight with a 6-3 win.
  • It was back and forth scoring to start out the singles competition. 
  • Morrissey put Washburn up 2-0 with her 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 slot. 
  • Midwestern State won the match at court No. 2 for its first point of the match. 
  • Soler Valverde completed her match next at No. 3 singles and won 6-4, 6-3. 
  • The Mustangs came on strong and went on to claim the next three singles matches with wins at Nos. 1, 6, and 5 to clinch the 4-3 victory.
  • Washburn bounced back the following day and shut out Southeastern Oklahoma State (2-10), 4-0.
  • The Ichabods clinched the doubles point with a pair of 6-2 victories from courts No. 1 and 3.
  • Washburn kept rolling once in singles action and won the first three matches to clinch the dual. 
  • Morrissey dominated at the No. 3 slot with a 6-0, 6-2 decision. 
  • Soler Valverde won her 18th-consecutive completed singles match, this time at court No. 2. She cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 victory. 
  • Crohn clinched the team victory at the No. 5 position as she blanked her opponent in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. 
  • The remaining three singles matches were unfinished after the Ichabods clinched. 


Scouting the Opposition …

Missouri Western Griffons

  • Missouri Western finished the 2018-19 regular season with a record of 11-12 (2-7 MIAA).
  • Washburn defeated Missouri Western, 6-1, on March 24.
  • The Ichabods swept the doubles competition and their one loss was at the No. 1 singles position.
  • The duo of Joanna Abreu Roman and Karolina Strom are 15-2 at No. 1 doubles. The pair is ranked at No. 44 in the latest ITA rankings.
  • Strom also leads the team with individual wins. She is 16-6 at No. 1 singles and is also ranked individually, checking in at No. 58.
  • The Griffons lost in the opening round of the conference tournament last season to Northeastern State.


Ichabods in the Rankings …

  • Washburn moved down two places and are now ranked seventh in Division II (April 24).
  • Three Ichabods remain ranked in the top-50 in singles.
  • Czapinski is the second-ranked singles player in the nation for the third straight week.
  • Engelbrecht fell six places to No. 26.
  • Soler Valverde moved up one spot to No. 46 on the list.
  • In doubles, Czapinski and Morrissey moved up one place to become the No. 1 doubles team in the nation.
  • The second edition of the NCAA regional rankings was released April 24th, with the Ichabods still at the top of the list in the Central Region.
  • Washburn was picked fourth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll.


'Bods and Ends …

  • Washburn's 21 wins in the regular season has only occurred one other time in program history. The 2000-01 Washburn women's tennis team also completed the regular season with a record of 21-2.
  • The Ichabods reached the tournament's semifinal round last season before falling to the eventual winner, Northeastern State.
  • Washburn has won four MIAA tournament championships (2010, 2004, 2000, 1991).
  • The most recent tournament title came against No. 41 Northwest Missouri on April 25, 2010 with a 5-3 victory.
  • Soler Valverde has won her last 18 completed singles matches. She finished with a record of 25-4 between the fall and spring seasons. 
  • Czapinski is right behind with 24 victories. She finished 24-4, going 20-2 at No. 2 single.
  • Soler Valverde and Czapinski are towards the top of the list for most singles wins in a season. Valverde is tied for fourth and Czapinski is tied for fifth. The program's top-three win totals in a single season are 36, 29, and 26.
  • Czapinski has her name near the top in another category, this time in doubles. She and teammate Morrissey are tied for second-most doubles wins in a season at 27. The most doubles victories by any Washburn pair in one season is 29.
  • Morrissey entered the top-10 of most career doubles. She is currently tied for ninth with 68 victories. The most career doubles wins in program history is 81.
  • Czapinski and Morrissey are on a 10 match winning streak and are 4-1 this season against nationally ranked opponents.


Coach Lance Lysaught

  • is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Washburn men's and women's tennis teams.
  • is 2-4 in the MIAA tournament, reaching the semifinal round twice.
  • has coached the Washburn women to a 58-46 overall record and is 23-22 in MIAA matches.
  • led the Ichabod men to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal round in 2018, the first time the program had ever advanced beyond the national round of 16.
  • was tabbed to start up the men's and women's tennis programs at Ottawa University in 2012 where he was the head coach for two seasons.
  • is a former Washburn student-athlete who played tennis for the Ichabods from 1987-91.
  • was a two-time District 10 singles champion and an NAIA national qualifier in both singles and doubles over his tenure as a player.
