Washburn plays host to Tabor on Friday

FIRST SERVE … 

  • The Washburn women's tennis team plays host to Tabor this Friday, March 6, at the Washburn Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
  • Washburn is 3-4 after sweeping Bethel earlier this week while the Bluejays are 1-5.

LAST WEEK …

  • The Ichabods hosted their first outdoor match of the season on Tuesday as they took on Bethel College.
  • Washburn won the doubles point to go up 1-0. 
  • Maria Soler Valverde and Kinsey Fields shut out their opponent, 6-0, on court two. 
  • The duo of Logan Morrissey and Svea Crohn clinched the point with a 6-3 win at the top of the order. 
  • There were not enough Bethel players to field a No. 3 doubles match and Washburn won by default.
  • In the singles competition, Soler Valverde did not drop a set in her victory at No. 1 in the lineup. 
  • Logan Morrissey won her match at No. 3 singles in similar fashion, 6-0. 6-0. 
  • Crohn recorded a 6-1, 6-4 decision at the No. 2 slot and Cadence Lynn rounded out the scoring for Washburn with a 6-0, 6-1 win. 
  • The Ichabods won the No. 5 and 6 matches by default.


 

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION ...

TABOR BLUEJAYS

  • The Bluejays are 1-5 this season after going 0-12 last year.
  • They have been shut out, 7-0, in the last two matches.
  • Tabor defeated Midland University on Valentine's Day, 5-1.
  • Tabor is led by Luke Rencher, who is in his fist season.
  • Washburn and Tabor first faced each other in 1980.
  • The Ichabods lead the all-time series, 7-1, and have won the last five-straight by the score of 9-0.
  • These two teams last met in 2018 in Topeka.


ICHABODS IN THE RANKINGS …

  • Washburn is receiving votes in the most recent ITA National top-25 poll, which was released Feb. 19.
  • The next ITA rankings will come out on March 18.
  • In the 2020 MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, the Ichabods landed in a tie for third.
  • The doubles team of Morrissey/Crohn are No. 22 in the latest national rankings (Nov. 20) and are second in the Central Region.
  • Three Ichabods are ranked in the top-15 of singles in the Central Region.
  • Soler Valverde checked in at seventh while Morrissey landed in ninth.
  • Crohn rounded out the top-15.

BODS AND ENDS …

  • The Ichabods went 5-1 last season when playing outdoors at the Washburn Tennis Complex.
  • Crohn, a sophomore, achieved 30 career singles wins after her straight-set decision against Bethel.
  • Morrissey is on win away from reaching 80 career victories in doubles.
  • She is now second-all time in Washburn's record books with 79 career doubles wins. Three more victories would make her the winningest doubles player in Washburn women's tennis history, surpassing Marissa Moment's 81 career wins.
  • She currently holds a record of 78-31 and is in a three-way tie for the second-most career wins.
  • Soler Valverde is 3-3 at the top of the order and is one win away from recording her 35th career singles victory in just her second year at Washburn.


 

INTERIM HEAD COACH DAVID PRICE …

  • David Price was appointed the interim head coach for the 2020 spring season on January 22, 2020. 
  • Price has been in his second stint as an assistant coach for the Washburn tennis programs for past three seasons. He also previously served as an assistant under head coach Peg Marmet.
  • He brings over 20 years of coaching experience to the program.
  • He was an Ichabod himself as he played for Washburn from 1988-92 where he played the No. 1 singles and doubles position.
  • Price earned the NAIA singles and doubles champion titles at the No. 1 position his freshman year as well as winning the conference championship at No. 1 singles as a senior.


 

TAKE A LOOK AHEAD …

  • The Ichabods get a little time off before they return to the court. They will play next on Thursday, March 19 in Wichita for a conference match against Newman.
