Ichabod Baseball falls in series finale at Regis

2/21/2021 5:40:00 PM

Box Score DENVER -- The Washburn baseball team saw its first inning lead quickly slip away as Regis closed out the four-game series sweep on Sunday afternoon with a 15-2 seven inning victory. The Ichabods start MIAA play next week on the road at Missouri Western. The first game is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 26, at 3 p.m. and then there will be a doubleheader the following day starting at 1 p.m.

Xavier De Leon led off the game with a single and then advanced to second on a fielding error. Parker Dunn roped a double to right center to plate De Leon and give Washburn a 1-0 lead.

The Rangers (4-0) responded with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first. A solo homer started the home half of the second to put Regis ahead 4-1. Two more runs were scored in the third when Brevin Owen legged out an inside the park homer.

The Rangers pulled their starter in the fifth and the Ichabods (0-4) capitalized on the change and made it a 6-2 contest after three-straight singles. De Leon got things going again with a one out single and then advanced to second on Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli's hit to centerfield. For the second time in the game it was Dunn who brought home De Leon as he landed a single to left. Brett Ingram drew a walk to load the bases, but a strikeout and foul out ended the Ichabod momentum in the frame.

Regis put the game out of reach scoring a combined nine runs between the fifth and sixth innings.

Dunn was 3-4 at the plate and drove in De Leon for both of Washburn's runs. De Leon went 2-4 on the day. Brant Bennett made his Ichabod debut out of the pen and threw a scoreless inning and did not allow a hit.

Washburn starter Jared Sharp was tabbed with the loss and Regis' Porter Hardcastle picked up the win giving up one run on four hits and striking out seven in four innings pitched.
