Box Score 2 LUBBOCK, Texas – The Washburn Ichabod softball team opened the 2021 season with a split on day one of the Lubbock Christian Invitational taking the opener 6-4 over Midwestern State before falling in the second game against host and No. 19-ranked Lubbock Christian 7-0. Washburn will wrap up the two-day event with West Texas A&M at 3 p.m. followed by UT-Permian Basin at 5 p.m.
Game 1 – WU 6, Midwestern State 4
The Ichabods broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth when
Jenna Moore tripled down the right field line scoring
Jaycee Ginter who walked the at bat before. Washburn added another in the fourth when
Ashton Friend reached on a fielder's choice driving in Moore with an RBI.
In the top of the fifth, the Mustangs cut the lead in half with a lead-off home run by Brooke Taylor to left.
Maddie Stipsits sent a pitch up the middle for a single scoring Marritt Mead who reached on a single of her own as Washburn went up 3-1 after five complete innings.
Midwestern State hit a lead-off home run by Jacey Henry to start the sixth pulling back within one run at 3-2 before Washburn starter
Raegen Hamm retired the side.
In the sixth, Moore led off the inning with a walk and then back-to-back singles by
Kimi Patterson and Friend loaded the bases and
Cailey Oldemeyer cleared them with a double down the left field line pushing Washburn's lead to 6-2.
In the top of the seventh, Mattye Tyler doubled down the line scoring a pair of Mustangs trimming the lead to 6-4 but the threat would end as the Ichabods picked up their first win of the season.
Stipsits was 3 for 4 with an RBI and Oldemeyer drove in three. In the circle Hamm tossed six innings scattering four hits allowing two runs and striking out three.
Game 2 – #19 Lubbock Christian 7, WU 0
The host No. 19 ranked Lady Chapps scored twice on a 2-run homer by Brooke Makemson in the bottom of the first taking the 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, Lubbock Christian took advantage of a Washburn error and scored two more runs on two hits pushing its lead to 4-0.
The Ichabods'
Kamryn Garvie broke up Taylor Franco's perfect game bid with a single to lead-off the sixth inning.
Makeemson hit her second home run of the game in the bottom of the sixth giving her 5 RBI on the day stretching the Lady Chapps lead to 7-0.
Franco picked up the win with the one-hit shutout kept her earned run average at 0.00 on the season.
Jaycee Ginter (0-1) took the loss throwing 126 pitches allowing only six hits after the sixth inning.
Garvie had the lone hit for the Ichabods.
