LEXINGTON, Ky. – Washburn volleyball went 2-1 last week and moved down two places in the latest AVCA Top-25 Poll into a tie at No. 14. The Ichabods will play their final two home matches of 2022 this week, hosting Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern on Oct. 26-27.
Last week, Washburn swept Emporia State and Newman and in between those lost a hard-fought five-set match to then-ranked No. 19 Central Oklahoma. With four matches remaining in the regular season, the Ichabods are 19-5 overall with an 11-5 mark in MIAA action and have clinched a place in the conference postseason while currently sitting fifth in the standings.
The former No. 1-ranked team Wayne State (24-1) suffered its first loss on Saturday in a five-set match to Southwest Minnesota State (20-3) and dropped down to No. 3. MSU Denver (21-1) took over the top spot and earned 26 first-place votes and 1,146 total points. Concordia-St. Paul (21-2) received three first-place votes and 1,108 points for second on the list. After Wayne State, Minnesota Duluth (21-2) and Southwest Minnesota remain where they were last week at Nos. 4 and 5.
The MIAA and Central Region continue to be well-represented in the national poll. Nebraska-Kearney (23-3) is eighth, Northwest Missouri is 12th, Washburn is 14th, and Central Oklahoma is 18
th with Central Missouri receiving votes and just outside the top-25 at No. 26. Nine of the top-20 teams are from the Central Region.
