Ichabods Open Spring Schedule Hosting William Woods

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Ichabods host their first official game of the spring against William Woods at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 6

First Serve

  • Washburn women's won its season opener, sweeping William Jewell 7-0. 
  • It is Washburn's fifth 7-0 sweep in the last two seasons, eight in the last 3 seasons
  • Isabella Martensson and Issabella Pensavalle earned their first singles wins as Ichabods. Martensson also earned her first doubles win with partner Maja Jung.
  • Under Coach Kirby Ronning, Washburn women's tennis have an 18-3 overall record
  • Ichabods, in their history, have won both games against William Woods. The last match in 2018, the Ichabods defeated the Owls, 6-3

2022 Ichabods

  • Junior Svea Crohn has an overall singles record of 27-25 and doubles record of 47-15. She is a four-time All-MIAA member, three-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member and received MIAA and ITA Scholar-Athlete honors in 2021
  • Kinsey Fields has a career singles record of 14-9 and 33-16 doubles record in a little over 3 seasons. She has earned All-MIAA Honorable Mention at No. 2 doubles, MIAA Academic Honor Roll three times and was a MIAA Scholar Athlete
  • Sydnee Foster in her third year holds a 8-6 singles record and 4-5 in doubles action. She is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll, an ITA Scholar-Athlete and earned the Academic Excellence award
  • Maja Jung has only recorded one dual singles loss as an Ichabods. Her only loss was to #5 Central Oklahoma's Blythe Buntrock last season. She is 20-2 overall in singles and 14-5 in doubles. She also earned All-MIAA Second Team at No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles in 2021
  • Cadence Lynn is 17-4 in singles and 5-9 in doubles at Washburn. She is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member and Scholar-Athlete
  • Freshman Issabella Pensavalle comes froms Jenks High School where she placed fourth in the state her freshman year
  • Freshman Lara Schmid transferred from St. Edward's University in Texas after the tennis program was eliminated in 2020. Schmid's first year was cut short due to COVID-19, but she still went undefeated in singles with five wins and 3-2 in doubles action
  • Schmid dominated from the No. 3 spot going 3-0 and outscoring her opponents 18-4 in the first set and 16-7 in the second
  • Marta Torres has a 15-9 singles record and 14-7 doubles record in over two seasons. She was All-MIAA honorable mention at No.6 singles and No. 1 doubles last season and was an ITA Scholar-Athlete

Box Score TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn women's tennis team defeated William Jewell, 7-0, in their home opener. The Ichabods begin their season 1-0.

Washburn opened the match strong sweeping the doubles competition to take the 1-0 lead. From the No. 3 spot, Cadence Lynn and Sydnee Foster won, 6-1 to start off on the right foot. Followed by Kinsey Fields and Marta Torres quickly sweeping their opponent, 6-0 from the No. 2 spot

In singles competition, Isabella Martensson finished first with a score of 6-1 in both sets from the No. 2 spot. Maja Jung in a tough battle earned the fourth point winning in two sets, 7-5 and 7-6 (3). Issabella Pensavalle had a strong performance sweeping her opponent in both sets out of the No. 5 spot for her first win as an Ichabod. 

The Ichabods take a break with their next opponent being Ottawa on Sunday, January 30. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. at Genesis Tennis Center.

Scouting the Owls

  • The Owls had a record of 15-6 overall during their 2020-21 season. William Woods women's team started its 2020-21 season with a six-match winning streak before losing three straight. They ended the season 9-3 while making it to the second round of the NAIA National Championships
  • William Woods has four players coming back and adding four incoming freshmen for its 2021-22 campaign
  • The Owls are losing three seniors with double-digit singles wins last season and two with 10-plus doubles wins. 
  • The Owls will be missing, Mireia Jordan who was named AMC/HAAC First Team Singles and Second Team Doubles and AMC/HAAC Player of the Year Zlata Shuraeva
  • William Woods is returning its top two performers in Ana Zavala and Rukshika Wijesooriya
  • Zavala had the Owls best singles and doubles record of 14-3 and 15-4 in 2020-21. She already has a 8-3 in singles this season. Zavala is also 10-2 in doubles with freshman partner Hannah Lindeboom. Zavala is ranked 12th nationally in NAIA
  • Zavala/Lindeboom as a doubles team are ranked 12th in NAIA
  • Wijesooriya had a 13-4 singles record and a 11-7 doubles record last season. She is 6-2 in singles and 3-3 in doubles this year. She is currently ranked No. 33 nationally in the NAIA
  • Lindeboom is starting her collegiate career with a 5-3 singles record and ranked No. 7 in the NAIA Central Region

Owls Head Coach Chance Joost

  • Chance Joost is entering his third year coaching William Woods men's and women's tennis
  • Joosts led the women's team to a HAAC.AMC/Sooner championship and to the second round of the NAIA National Championships in his second season
  • Joost's first coaching stint was as an assistant at Washburn for two seasons. He also played for the Ichabods, earning All-MIAA honors and is 15th in singles wins at Washburn

Box Score TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn women's tennis team will head into the MIAA Championship Tournament with a four-match winning streak after beating William Woods 6-3 Thursday.

The Ichabods swept doubles play and singles matches in slots 1-3 to clinch an early win. Alexis Czapinski was the deciding match, winning out of No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-2.

With the win, the Ichabods will finish the regular season 11-7, and will hold the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament. They will take on Northwest Missouri State, the No. 5 seed. When the Ichabods and the Bearcats faced off earlier in the season, the Ichabods came away with a 5-4 victory.

Looking Ahead

Ichabods head to Missouri for two matches against Indianapolis and Williams Jewell on Feb. 12 and 13. The first serve against Indianapolis is at 6:30 p.m. and first serve for William Jewell is at 2 p.m.
