Women's Tennis Set for Two Top-15 Matchups

AZUSA, Calif. -- The Ichabods take a flight to California for two matches against top-15 opponents in Azusa Pacific and Hawaii Pacific. Both matches begin at 12 p.m. CT.

First Serve

  • The women's team went drop both games, 4-3, to Southeastern Oklahoma State and No. 22 Midwestern State
  • The Ichabods will play the Cougars and Sharks for the first time in program history
  • Washburn has struggled during this road stretch going 2-4
  • The Ichabods are 0-2 against ranked opponents

2022 Ichabods

  • Junior Svea Crohn has an overall singles record of 40-28 and doubles record of 51-17. She is a four-time All-MIAA member, three-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member and received MIAA and ITA Scholar-Athlete honors in 2021
  • Crohn tied Washburn's single-season doubles winning percentage mark of .895 last season
  • Kinsey Fields has a career singles record of 17-10 and 37-17 doubles record in a little over 3 seasons. She has earned All-MIAA Honorable Mention at No. 2 doubles, MIAA Academic Honor Roll three times and was an MIAA Scholar-Athlete
  • Sydnee Foster in her third year holds a 9-6 singles record and 5-5 in doubles action. She is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll, an ITA Scholar-Athlete and earned the Academic Excellence award
  • Maja Jung is 25-4 overall in singles and 18-6 in doubles. She also earned All-MIAA Second Team at No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles in 2021
  • Cadence Lynn is 20-16 in singles and 6-9 in doubles at Washburn. She is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member and Scholar-Athlete
  • Isabella Martensson starts her Washburn career 6-3 in doubles
  • Freshman Issabella Pensavalle comes from Jenks High School where she placed fourth in the state her freshman year. She is 3-1 in singles and 1-0 in doubles to begin her career
  • Freshman Lara Schmid transferred from St. Edward's University in Texas after the tennis program was eliminated in 2020. Schmid is 3-3 in singles play and 4-2 in doubles action as an Ichabod
  • Marta Torres has a 17-13 singles record and 18-9 doubles record in over two seasons. She was All-MIAA honorable mention at No.6 singles and No. 1 doubles last season and was an ITA Scholar-Athlete

  • Jung is fifth on Washburn's all-time career singles winning percentage list (min. 20 wins). She is 25-4 (.862) in singles play which is only behind Madeline Hill's 36-2 singles record

ROAD TRIP

  • The Ichabods continue on their eight-match road trip where they travel to Missouri, Texas, and California
  • Washburn will compete against three top-20 opponents. The Ichabods dropped the first ranked match to No. 22 MSU
  • In the last five seasons, the Ichabods are 30-20 in road/neutral matches. Washburn is 13-7 under Coach Ronning

FIELDS GREAT

  • Fields has posted a 5-2 singles record and a 5-2 doubles record
  • She is 4-1 in dual singles from three different spots on the lineup
  • After not playing for three matches, She came in clutch against No. 22 Midwestern State. The Ichabods were down 3-2 to the Mustangs and fought in a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles to keep them in the match

FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING

  • Washburn will play Azusa Pacific and Hawaii Pacific for the first time in program history.
  • The Ichabods have a 61-38 record when facing a team for the first time

Scouting the Cougars

  • The Cougars held a 16-3 record last season and made it to the NCAA West Regional Finals. This season, they are 5-4
  • Azusa lost two players with double-digit singles wins and three with 10-plus doubles wins in Petra Ivankovic, Page Courtney and Jacky Wagner.
  • Ivankovic was 10-4 in singles and 12-3 in doubles. She is an ITA Singles and Doubles All-American and claimed ITA Fall West Region Doubles Championship
  • Page went 15-1 in doubles with partner Madison Kane
  • Wagner led the team with 16 singles wins and was 15-4 in doubles play. 
  • Key returners are Carolyn Brooner, Madison Kane, and Anna Savchenko
  • Brooner was 10-4 in singles and 14-4 in doubles with Wagner. Brooner is 4-3 at No. 3 singles and 5-3 in doubles this season. She is 4-1 at No. 3 doubles with freshmen Lilla Plasek
  • Kane went 12-5 in singles and 15-1 in doubles with Page. She is 6-2 at No. 2 singles and 6-2 at No. 1 doubles with freshmen Eleonora Liga
  • Savchenko had a singles record of 8-5 and a doubles record of 11-3 with Ivankovic. She has not competed yet this season
  • Liga from Palermo, Italy is dominated in her first season asa a Cougar. She is already playing first in the lineup and has a 8-0 singles record along with a 5-1 doubles record
  • The Cougars' bottom singles lineup has been struggling. the bottom three spots have a combined record 10-12.

Cougars Head Coach Mark Bohren

  • Mark Bohren is entering his 26th-year coaching the Cougars
  • Bohren had an instrumental role in establishing the program and holds a 379-178 women's record
  • He has guided the Cougars to 15 NAIA Tournaments appearances, two NCAA Tournament appearances, one GSAC championship, and eight GSAC runner-up finishes
  • Cougars won their first NCAA Division II West Region title in 2019
  • Bohren has produced 12 All-PacWest players, six All-PacWest doubles teams, and 30 All-PacWest Academic players
  • Bohren played four season for former Cougar head coach Jack Carter and graduated with a bachelor's and master's at Azusa

Scouting the Sharks

  • The Sharks posted a 9-4 record in 2020-21 and are 5-3 to start this season. Hawaii Pacific began the season winning its first five matches but has since lost its last three
  • The sharks veteran squad lost just one player from last season in Nicole Ballach
  • Ballach went 6-2 in singles and 7-5 in doubles 
  • Senior Elodie Busson is a key returner as she led the team with a 11-1 singles record and also had a 6-4 doubles record in 2020-21. She is an ITA All-American and earned ITA West Rookie of the Year, PacWest Necomer of the Year, PacWest Player of the Year, First Team All-PacWest Singles and Doubles. This season she is just 4-3 in singles and 4-1 in doubles
  • Busson's doubles partner, Valentina Mokrova will also be returning. She was 4-6 in singles play. Mokrova is 1-3 in singles and 2-3 in doubles this season
  • Senior Marleen Tilgner is back after a 9-1 singles record and a 9-3 doubles record mostly with Mihoki Miyahara. She is 6-0 at No. 3 singles and 5-2 at No. 1 doubles with freshmen Shaline Pipa
  • Pipa took over No. 1 singles and is 6-0 (7-0 overall) from that spot and 5-1 at No. 1 doubles

Sharks Head Coach Lauren Conching

  • Lauren Conching enters her tenth season as the head women's tennis coach
  • She also has served as Hawaii Pacific's Assistant Athletic Director for five years
  • Conching holds a mark of 160-49 with eight trips to the NCAA National Championships, including five semifinal appearances
  • She has been twice named the ITA/Wilson National Coach of the Year, ITA West Region Coach of the Year and PacWest Coach of the Year (2013, 2018)
  • She has had nine players named ITA All-Americans and two named to the CoSIDA Academic All-Ammerica Team
  • She is a member of the ITA Board of Directors and serves on several committees
  • Prior to becoming head coach, Conching spent five seasons as the women's assistant at HPU under Stefan Pampulov. In all five seasons, HPU reached the NCAA National Championships. She was named ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2010
  • Conching attended Collin County College, where she won the 2001 National Junior College doubles title and placed second at the NJCAA nationals

 Ichabods in the Rankings

  • The Ichabods dropped out of the ITA DII Women's National Team Rankings, released on March 10

Looking Ahead

After a long road trip, Washburn returns home on March 18 for a match against Augustana (SD) at 1:30 p.m.
