Washburn wins seventh straight in high-scoring affair at Newman

WICHITA, Kan. – The Ichabods scored nine runs in the first two innings to set the tone as the team pounded out 23 hits and four home runs in the 22-19 victory against Newman on Saturday afternoon. The first pitch for Sunday's series finale has been moved up to 10:30 a.m. in an effort to avoid forecasted rain in the afternoon.

Washburn's 23 hits ranks third in the program's single-game record, dating back to 1999. The Ichabods have also scored 22 runs two other times since 1999 with the last time occurring against Bemidji State exactly seven years ago on March 5, 2015.

The Ichabods (14-4, 5-0 MIAA) got on the board in a hurry in the first as they sent eight players to the plate and scored four runs on five hits. Leading off the game, Easton Bruce reached first on an error and then scored on Cal Watkins' triple. Parker Dunn legged out an infield single and Brett Ingram brought in a run with a double to right field. Connor Scott kept the line moving with a two-RBI single to left to give Washburn the 4-0 advantage.

On another windy day, Newman (11-6, 2-3 MIAA) hit three solo home runs in the bottom of the first to make it a 4-3 game.

It was Washburn's turn to start cranking out home runs in the second inning as Ingram hit a three-run bomb and Cale Savage added a two-run dinger to center field to push the Ichabods' lead to 9-3.

Otto Jones led off the third with his first collegiate home run, hitting it over the fence in center field. Teagan Tamiya and Easton Bruce hit back-to-back singles and both scored on Dunn's single to right center as Washburn took a 12-3 lead.

Newman plated three runs in the bottom of the third to cut Washburn's lead in half, 12-6.

With two outs in the top of the fourth and Washburn runners on first and second, Bruce landed a single in center field to score one run. Watkins followed that up with a double that plated two runs and grew the Ichabod lead to 15-6.

Newman capitalized on Washburn miscues in the home half of the frame and scored three to pull within 15-9.

For the first time in the entire game, both teams went scoreless in each half of the fifth inning. The scoring resumed in the bottom of the sixth when the Jets put up one run on an Ichabod error to make it a five-run game.

The Ichabods poured on six runs on three hits and two errors in the top of the seventh to lead 21-10. Scott and Kros Bay both recorded RBI doubles in the frame.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Jets responded with three runs.

The score wouldn't stay that way for long as Watkins hit a leadoff home run in the eighth, his first in a Washburn uniform.

The final runs of the afternoon were scored in the bottom of the ninth as the Jets got four runs on four hits. Trevor Marreel got the last two outs with a ground out and a fly out to earn the save in the 22-19 Ichabod victory.

All nine Ichabods in the starting lineup recorded at least one hit and scored twice. Dunn led the team with four hits, going 4-6 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Watkins finished the day 3-5 with four RBI and four runs scored and was a single shy of hitting for the cycle. Bruce and Scott also had three hits apiece and Ingram drove in a team-high five runs and scored three runs.

Washburn starter Casey Steward received a no-decision as he went four innings and allowed nine runs, five of which were earned, on six hits and zero walks. He also struck out a career-high 10 batters on the day. Austin Gerety (2-0) was tabbed with the win in 1.1 innings pitched and surrendered just one run, unearned, and one hit.
