No. 50 Women's Tennis concludes the regular season at home against Northeastern State and No. 4 Central Oklahoma

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn concludes the regular season with Northeastern State on April 23 and No. 4 Central Oklahoma on April 24 in Topeka.

First Serve

  • On April 23 against Northeastern, Washburn will recognize its two seniors, Svea Crohn and Kinsey Fields, before the match at 11:30 a.m.
  • The women's team stayed undefeated (6-0) in the conference after taking down  Emporia State, 5-2
  • The women's team is tied with Central Oklahoma at the top of the MIAA standings
  • The Ichabods are 2-16 against the RiverHawks however the Ichabods have won the last two matches
  • The Ichabods are 4-12 against Central Oklahoma. Washburn women's last win was also the last time the two teams played in Topeka
  • The Ichabod women's tennis team is 13-1 in the conference in the last two seasons

2022 Ichabods

  • Senior Crohn has an overall singles record of 46-33 and a doubles record of 61-18. She is a four-time All-MIAA member, three-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member and received MIAA and ITA Scholar-Athlete honors in 2021
  • Crohn tied Washburn's single-season doubles winning percentage mark of .895 last season
  • Fields has a career singles record of 18-11 and 44-20 doubles record in three seasons. She has earned All-MIAA Honorable Mention at No. 2 doubles, MIAA Academic Honor Roll three times and was an MIAA Scholar-Athlete
  • Sydnee Foster in her third year holds a 9-6 singles record and 6-5 in doubles action. She is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll, an ITA Scholar-Athlete and earned the Academic Excellence award
  • Maja Jung is 32-9 overall in singles and 25-9 in doubles. She also earned All-MIAA Second Team at No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles in 2021
  • Cadence Lynn is 27-20 in singles and 7-9 in doubles at Washburn. She is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member and Scholar-Athlete
  • Isabella Martensson starts her Washburn career 15-6 in doubles play
  • Freshman Issabella Pensavalle comes from Jenks High School, where she placed fourth in the state her freshman year. She is 5-2 in singles and 1-0 in doubles to begin her career
  • St. Edward's transfer Lara Schmid is 10-6 in singles play and 13-5 in doubles action as an Ichabod
  • Marta Torres has a 25-18 singles record, and a 28-10 doubles record in less than two seasons. She was All-MIAA honorable mention at No. 6 singles and No. 1 doubles last season and was an ITA Scholar-Athlete

Washburn Notes

SENIOR DAY

  • The Washburn women's tennis team will recognize seniors Crohn and Fields on Saturday
  • Crohn played four seasons at Washburn, accumulating a 46-33 singles record and 61-18 doubles record
  • Her 46 singles wins are 24th in program history and her 61 doubles wins are 13th in program history
  • The doubles winning percentage of .772 is also 13th in Washburn history
  • Fields also played four seasons at Washburn and tallied an 18-11 singles record and a 44-20 doubles record

STRONG FINISH

  • The Ichabods were once 4-8 back in late March
  • Since March 26, Washburn women have won eight of their last nine matches to improve to 12-9
  • Two games remaining on the schedule, both at home, where the women are 5-2

UNBEATEN IN THE CONFERENCE

  • The Ichabods are 6-0 in conference play this season
  • Washburn winning its first six conference matches last happened in 2018-19. The Ichabods ended undefeated (9-0) in the MIAA that year

Scouting the RiverHawks

  • The RiverHawks are 5-12 overall and 1-5 in the conference. Northeastern State is coming off its first conference win over Fort Hays State
  • Northeastern State has a veteran roster consisting of two graduate students, three seniors, three juniors, and two freshmen
  • Vera Carvalho leads the team in singles wins with her 12-8 singles record. She is also 7-13 in doubles 
  • Junior Belinda Jayaprakash leads the team in doubles wins with a 9-12 doubles record. She is 8-11 in singles this season
  • Freshman Emilia Cosatto has shown promise with a 5-3 singles record and a 5-2 doubles record
  • The RiverHawks have struggled in doubles play with no players with 10-plus wins. Twenty-two different doubles teams have competed this season
  • Northeastern State wraps up its season at No. 59 Washburn and No. 41 Northwest Missouri

RiverHawks Head Coach Tim McLane

  • Tim McLane is in his second season head coaching the women's tennis program at Northeastern State
  • In his first season, the RiverHawks finished fifth in the MIAA with an 8-9 overall record and a 4-5 conference record
  • McLane came to Tahlequah from USC Upstate, where he was the head coach for both men's and women's tennis programs for two seasons
  • He guided the Spartans to a Big South Conference postseason berth for the men and reached the championship quarterfinals
  • McLane was the program's top assistant for two years before becoming the head coach
  • Prior to USC Upstate, he  was an assistant men's tennis coach at Mercer from 2014-16
  • He played tennis at Monmouth University for four seasons

Scouting the Bronchos

  • No. 4 Central Oklahoma is 14-1 overall and 6-0 in the MIAA. The Bronchos are 5-1 against ranked opponents including wins over No. 5 Columbus State and No. 7 Indianapolis
  • The Bronchos' lone loss was to No. 1 Barry in the ITA Indoor Championship
  • The Bronchos' roster has a good mix of veterans and young talent. The rostersincludes a graduate, two juniors, three sophomores, and three freshmen
  • Central Oklahoma sports five players with double-digit singles wins and four with 10-plus doubles wins
  • Two-time MIAA Player of the Year Adel-Byanu Abidullina has not lost a singles match all season (12-0) and is 13-1 in doubles
  • At the top of the lineup are the Canete sisters, Mae and Christine
  • Mae as a sophomore moved to No. 1 singles and doubles. She is 12-2 in singles and  10-2 in doubles with her sister. She has a 33-2 career singles record and a 24-5 career doubles record
  • Christine Canete is a freshman and has already grabbed No.2 singles. She is 10-1 in singles and 10-2 in doubles
  • Abidullina's doubles partner Tizia Brocks is 10-4 in singles in her first season
  • Freshman Grace Chadick is 10-4 in singles and 2-0 in doubles

Bronchos Head Coach Joe Vann

  • Joe Vann is in his first season head coaching the women's tennis program at Central Oklahoma
  • Vann came to UCO from UT Tyler, where he spent four seasons as the assistant coach for both men's and women's programs
  • During his tenure at Tyler, he helped capture five American Southwest Conference championships and made three trips to the NCAA regional semis
  • Vann is a graduate of UT Tyler. He earned ALL-ASC honors both on the court and in the classroom
  • Between stints at Tyler, he helped start the East Texas Baptist tennis programs in 2012
  • Prior to ETBU, Vann was the assistant tennis coach and director of the tennis academy at Austin Peay State

 Ichabods in the Rankings

  • The Ichabods climb up nine more spots into the top-50 in the ITA National Team Rankings at No. 50
  • Torres is ranked No. 6 in the Central Region
  • Martensson and Schmid also continue to move up. the doubles team went up seven places to No. 26 in the ITA Doubles Ranking

Looking Ahead

The Ichabods get ready for the MIAA Championship from April 29 through May 1
