EDMOND, Okla. -- Washburn enters the MIAA Tournament as the second seed with a 7-1 conference record. The Ichabods play the seventh seed in Emporia State on April 29, at 10 a.m.

- St. Edward's transfer Lara Schmid is 11-7 in singles play and 14-6 in doubles action as an Ichabod. Schmid achieved First Team All-MIAA at No. 5 singles and Honorable Mention at No. 1 doubles
- Marta Torres has a 26-19 singles record, and a 30-10 doubles record in less than two seasons. She received All-MIAA Second Team at No. 1 singles and No. 3 doubles and is a 2021 ITA Scholar-Athlete

MIAA TOURNAMENT
- The Ichabods enter the MIAA Women's Tennis Tournament as the second seed after going 7-1 in MIAA play
- Eight MIAA women's tennis teams will appear in the tournament hosted by Central Oklahoma at Edmond Center Courts
- The quarterfinals are set for April 29, at 10 a.m. The winners will advance to the semifinals on April 30, starting at the same time
- The MIAA Championship game is on May 1, starting at 10 a.m.
- The conference winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Central Regional
ALL-MIAA TEAMS
- The Ichabods landed seven players on the ALL-MIAA teams
- Freshman Schmid highlighted the group with a First Team All-MIAA honors at No. 5 singles. Schmid compiled an 11-7 singles record and a 7-0 record at No. 5 singles
- The last freshman to achieve first-team recognition was Svea Crohn, following the 2018-19 season
- Washburn placed Torres, Lynn, and Crohn on the All-MIAA Second Team. Torres earned second-team at No.1 singles and with Crohn at No. 3 doubles
- Jung, Crohn, and Martensson achieved honorable mention in singles. Martensson/Schmid and Jung/Kinsey achieved honorable mention in doubles
PREVIOUS MATCH AGAINST Emporia State
EMPORIA, Kan. – The No. 59 Ichabods end their road stretch with a 5-2 victory at Emporia State. Washburn went 5-1 during the road stand and stayed unbeaten in the MIAA.
In doubles competition, No. 33 Isabella Martensson and Lara Schmid continued their hot streak against Victoria Mackova and Karen Santiago Sanchez with a 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles. Svea Crohn and Marta Torres got back to their winning ways, defeating Paige Stranghoner and Andrea Santiago, 7-5.
Maja Jung and Kinsey Fields battled to a tiebreaker but did not finish their match tied, 6-6.
Martensson limited Santiago in a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles. In the third position, Crohn also won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, over Stranghoner. Washburn clinched its sixth conference win when Torres topped Micaela McSpadden, 6-3, 7-6(2).
Cadence Lynn and Issabella Pensavalle took their matches to a third-set super tiebreaker. Pensavalle grabbed the win over Kelsie Burr, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0(10-5) at the bottom of the lineup. Unfortunately, Lynn's match went the other way, with her losing a tight contest to Mackova, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(10-8).
Emporia State (6-10) earned the final two match points against Lynn and Jung at No. 5 and No. 2 singles.
The Ichabods return home for the final two matches of the regular season. Washburn hosts Northeastern State on Saturday, April 23, at 2 p.m. for senior day.

Scouting the Hornets
- Emporia State ended the regular season with a 7-12 overall record and a 2-6 MIAA record. The Hornets will appear in the MIAA Tournament as the seventh seed
- Senior Karen Santiago Sanchez led the Hornets in singles wins and tied for the most doubles wins. Sanchez went 8-10 in singles and went 5-3 in the conference. She also compiled a 7-12 doubles record
- Senior Viktoria Mackova went 7-7 in singles and 6-12 in doubles
- Freshmen Andrea Santiago and Paige Stranghoner showed promise as they both compiled seven singles wins
- Stranghoner also contributed in doubles with seven doubles wins
- Another freshman Micaela McSpadden was fifth in singles wins with 6 and tallied six doubles wins
Hornets Head Coach Les Stafford
- Les Stafford is in his third season head coaching the Hornets' men's and women's tennis programs
- Stafford compiled an 18-23 women's record since being hired before the 2019 season
- He spent 15 years before becoming the head coach as the head tennis pro at Crestview Country Club in Wichita, Kan.
- Stafford spent 14 seasons as the head coach of the women's program at Wichita State from 1990-2004 and was a four-time conference coach of the year
- He went 178-143 in dual match play with four conference tournament championships and one regular-season title
- Stafford was a four-time NAIA National Tournament qualifier during his career with the Hornets
- He went 20-5 in singles while going 20-6 with Ken Hush in doubles in 1979 as they were the first teammates in District 10 history to qualify for singles at nationals in the same year
- He won the No. 1 singles and No.1 doubles championship at the CSIC Tournament his senior year
- He was the No. 1 ranked singles player in the state of Kansas for seven years and was ranked No. 1 in the state in doubles for 15 years

- Torres is ranked No. 6 in the Central Region
