No. 2 seed Ichabods take on No. 3 seed Missouri Western in MIAA semifinals

EDMOND, Okla. -- The No. 2 seed Ichabods take on the No. 3 seed Griffons in the MIAA Tournament semifinals on April 30 at 10 a.m.

First Serve

  • The women's team defeated Emporia State, 4-0, to advance in the tournament
  • The Ichabods are 30-2 against Missouri Western, including a 5-2 win over the Griffons on April 12
  • Washburn is 4-0 against Missouri Western at neutral site matches. The two teams played each other in the first round 2019 MIAA Tournament. The Ichabods won, 4-0
  • The Ichabod women's tennis team is 14-2 in the conference in the last two seasons. The two losses are against Central Oklahoma

2022 Ichabods

  • Senior Svea Crohn has an overall singles record of 48-34 and a doubles record of 64-18. She is a five-time All-MIAA member and a three-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member. She received Second Team All-MIAA at No. 3 doubles and honorable mention at No. 3 singles 
  • Crohn tied Washburn's single-season doubles winning percentage mark of .895 last season
  • Kinsey Fields has a career singles record of 19-11 and 44-21 doubles record in three seasons. She has earned All-MIAA Honorable Mention at No. 2 doubles twice, MIAA Academic Honor Roll three times and was an MIAA Scholar-Athlete
  • Sydnee Foster in her third year holds a 9-6 singles record and 6-5 in doubles action. She is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll, an ITA Scholar-Athlete and earned the Academic Excellence award
  • Maja Jung is 34-10 overall in singles and 25-10 in doubles. She also earned All-MIAA Second Team at singles and honorable mention at No. 2 doubles twice
  • Cadence Lynn is 27-21 in singles and 7-9 in doubles at Washburn. She is a two-time MIAA Academic Honor Roll member, a Scholar-Athlete and an All-MIAA Second Team and Honorable Mention at No. 6 singles
  • Isabella Martensson starts her Washburn career 17-7 in doubles play. She received honorable mention at No. 4 singles and No.1 doubles
  • Freshman Issabella Pensavalle comes from Jenks High School, where she placed fourth in the state her freshman year. She is 5-2 in singles and 1-0 in doubles to begin her career
  • St. Edward's transfer Lara Schmid is 11-7 in singles play and 15-6 in doubles action as an Ichabod. Schmid achieved First Team All-MIAA at No. 5 singles and Honorable Mention at No. 1 doubles
  • Marta Torres has a 26-19 singles record, and a 31-10 doubles record in less than two seasons. She received All-MIAA Second Team at No. 1 singles and No. 3 doubles and is a 2021 ITA Scholar-Athlete

Washburn Notes

MIAA TOURNAMENT

  • The Ichabods enter the MIAA Women's Tennis Tournament as the second seed after going 7-1 in MIAA play
  • Eight MIAA women's tennis teams will appear in the tournament hosted by Central Oklahoma at Edmond Center Courts
  • The semifinals are on April 30, starting at the same time
  • The MIAA Championship game is on May 1, starting at 10 a.m.
  • The conference winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Central Regional

SECOND ROUND

  • Washburn advances to the second round of the MIAA Tournament after beating Emporia State, 4-0
  • The Ichabods won the first round and moved onto  the second of the MIAA Tournament for the fifth time in six years
  • The team did not accomplish the feat in 2020 due to the season being canceled
  • In that span, the Ichabods went winless in the second round of the tournament

PREVIOUS MATCH AGAINST Missouri Western

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Ichabods stay undefeated in conference play with a 5-2 win at No. 57 Missouri Western. Washburn women's tennis moved to 4-0 in the MIAA.

In doubles competition, Isabella Martensson and Lara Schmid topped Anya Chavez and Isabella MacGibbon, 6-4, for their sixth straight doubles win. The Griffins (13-4) evened it with a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles.

The doubles point came down to the No. 2 doubles match. Maja Jung and Kinsey Fields' 6-4 victory clinched Washburn's fifth straight doubles point.

Marta Torres bounced back in a strong, 6-3, 6-1 performance over Chavez in the first position. Missouri Western, down 2-0, won in straight sets at No. 4 singles. SveaCrohn pushed the Washburn (10-9) lead back up to two by defeating MacGibbons, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3, in the third spot. The Griffons fought back with another straight-set victory at No. 2 singles.

Schmid earned the deciding point against IoannaLathouri with a 6-3, 7-5, victory at No. 5 singles. Schmid extends her singles win streak to six matches. At the bottom of the lineup, Cadence Lynn won her first set 6-3, then lost the second set 6-4. Since Washburn had secured the victory, Cadence Lynn played in a third-set super tiebreaker which she narrowly passed Iglesias, Claudia, 11-9, for the win.

The Ichabod women's team heads to Wichita, Kan., to play Newman on Thursday, April 14, starting at 1 p.m.

Scouting the Griffons

  • The No. 51 Griffons finished the regular season with a 15-4 overall record and 6-2 MIAA record
  • The Griffons' conference success led them to be the third seed in the MIAA Tournament. The Griffons defeated Newman, 4-0, to advance in the tournament
  • Missouri Western has five players who won 10-plus singles wins and doubles wins. The Griffins also have six players earn All-MIAA honors
  • The singles lineup starts with sophomore Anya Chavez, She tallied an 11-7 singles record and a 10-8 doubles record both from the No. 1 spot. Chavez received All-MIAA honorable mention in both positions
  • Christian Brothers transfer Esther Guemes excelled in No. 2 singles and doubles for the Griffins. Guemes tallied a 17-1 singles record and a 12-6 doubles record. She is Second Team All-MIAA in singles and honorable mention in doubles
  • Junior Claudia Iglesias is Guemes' doubles partner, who also went 12-6 in doubles in addition to her 14-3 singles record. She achieved All-MIAA Second Team at No. 5 singles
  • In the middle of the lineup, there is Isabella MacGibbon and Anais Peralta Criado
  • MacGibbons compiled a 10-7 singles record and a 10-8 doubles record with Chavez. She earned All-MIAA honorable mention with Chavez at No. 1 doubles
  • Criado went 16-2 in singles and 12-2 in doubles with two different partners. She received All-MIAA First Team with Ioanna Lathouri while also earning Second Team at No. 4 singles
  • Senior Ioanna Lathouri missed some time this season, but since coming back has gone 4-1 in singles and 7-0 in doubles

Griffons Head Coach Alejandro De la Torre

  • Alejandro De la Torre is in his first season as head women's tennis coach at Missouri Western
  • De la Torre comes to St. Joseph after two seasons at NCAA DII St. Mary's (TX), where he served as a graduate assistant coach in 2020 and full-time assistant coach in 2021
  • During his time there, he helped the women's team to a top-15 ranking and an NCAA Elite Eight appearance while assisting the men in achieving their top-25 ITA ranking as an NCAA South Central Regionals finalist in 2021
  • The native of Madrid played collegiate tennis at DII North Greenville (SC), playing in the number one spot for the Crusaders
  • De la Torre also serves as a coach for the Sanchez-Casal Academy in Florida and the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain

 Ichabods in the Rankings

  • The Ichabods dropped to No.54 in the latest ITA Team Rankings after going 1-1 on the week
  • Torres is ranked No. 6 in the Central Region
  • Martensson and Schmid moved up again to No. 24 in the ITA Doubles Rankings
  • The Ichabods sit fourth in the NCAA Central Region Rankings

Looking Ahead

The winner will advance to play the winner of No. 4 Central Oklahoma and Northwest Missouri State match in the MIAA Championship on May 1, starting at 10 a.m.
