Ichabods wrapping up the 2023 campaign hosting RiverHawks on Senior Day

FOR STARTERS
• The Washburn Ichabod football team will wrap up the season on Saturday hosting Northeastern State at 1 p.m. in Yager Stadium on senior day.
• Washburn is 1-9 and 0-9 in the MIAA after falling at Central Oklahoma last time out 41-7 in Edmond, Okla. last time out.
• The RiverHawks are 1-9 and 0-9 as well after being shutout 52-0 by Northwest Missouri in their home finale.
• The Ichabods have won the last 10 meetings against the RiverHawks including a 21-17 win at Northeastern in the 2022 final game.
• Washburn has averaged 37.9 points per game in the 12 all-time meetings including a 35-0 win and a 58-14 win in the last two games played in Topeka.
• Washburn is 6-0 in games played against the RiverHawks in Topeka and improved to 5-1 in games played in Tahlequah with the win last season. The lone loss in the series came on Sept. 27, 1988 in a 35-30 defeat.
 
 BLUE NOTES
• The Ichabods have played 15 true freshmen so far this season and have also played 27 redshirt freshmen this season.
• D.J. Bell leads the team with 19 plays of more than 20 yards including 11 kickoff returns of more than 20 yards and Bell is also second in the MIAA in all-purpose yards per game with 125.5 ranking 24th in the NCAA ranks.
• The Ichabods are looking to avoid their first 0-9 start to MIAA play since the 1993 season when they started 0-10 in league action.
• The Ichabods are 18 of 71 on third downs in the last five games.
 
PRO BODS
• The Washburn Ichabods have two former players on NFL rosters this season.
• Kyle Hinton is on the 53-man roster of the Atlanta Falcons.
• Corey Ballentine was elevated to the 53-man roster in Green Bay for its game on Sept. 24.
• James Letcher, Jr. is a standout return specialist in the Canadian Football League playing for the Montreal Alouettes.

• was named head coach of the Ichabod football program Dec. 28, 2001.
• is 138-101 (.599) in his 21st season as the Ichabod head coach and the sixth-longest tenured football coach in MIAA history.
• is 121-88 (.603) against the MIAA in league games.
• has led the Ichabods to four NCAA Playoff appearances and four bowl appearances and three bowl championships.
• led the Ichabods to the 2005 MIAA regular season outright championship.
• led the Ichabods to the program's first 10-win season and their first NCAA or NAIA playoff game victory in school history with a win over Abilene Christian during the 2011 season.

Northeastern State head coach J.J. Eckert  . . .  
• is in his fifth season as the RiverHawks' head coach going 4-39. As a collegiate head coach he is 89-100 in his 19th season.

• through the 2018 season, Eckert has served as head coach at Kilgore College since the spring of 2007 and came off a 10-2 season and a national ranking at number-4 (No. 4) in the final NJCAA poll. Eckert guided the Rangers to a Southwest Junior College Football Conference (SWJCFC) Championship, and a win in the Heart of Texas Bowl.

NOTING THE RIVERHAWKS
• The RiverHawks are 1-9 and 0-9 in the MIAA after being shutout by Northwest Missouri last time out in a 52-0 loss.
• NSU has been shutout in five games this season including their last two.
• Northeastern State is 11th in the MIAA in scoring average at 9.7 ppg and ranked 11th in scoring defense allowing 41.8 per contest. Overall NSU has been outscored 418 to 97 this season.
• The RiverHawks are last in the league in total offense averaging 202.3 yards per game and i total defense allowing 455.3 yards per game.
• Blake May leads the team in rushing averaging 51.3 yards per game adding two touchdowns.
• Ben Ward has five touchdown passes averaging 70.0 yards per game.
• Will Bernger is averaging 12.8 yards per catch with two scores and 28.1 yards per game.
• Defensively Makarios Brown has 76 takles with 1.5 for loss and Dalton Crumbly has 69 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss.
 
LAST MEETING WITH THE RIVERHAWKS
(Oct. 29, 2022) TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Washburn Ichabod defense held Northeastern State to 54 yards in the second half forcing six punts and Taylon Peters scored on a 3-yard run with 1:49 to go in the game as the Ichabods won their 10th game in a row over Northeastern State in a 21-17 win on Saturday in Tahlequah. The Ichabods will open up the home slate with undefeated Pittsburg State on senior day Nov. 5  at 1 p.m. in Yager Stadium.
After trailing 17-6 at the break, Washburn (6-3, 6-3 MIAA) had the first possession of the frame, but an interception on the first play of the drive returned the ball back to the host RiverHawks, but the Ichabods defense forced the first of their six punts in the half and Washburn took over. On the drive, Peters had rushes for 22, 3, 2, 9 and 22 for the score with 10:27 left in the third quarter cutting the NSU lead 17-12. Peters would then catch the 2-point conversion from Kellen Simoncic trimming the lead back to 17-14.
On the go-ahead drive, Jared Taylor connected with James Letcher, Jr., on a 25-yard strike converting a third and 7 and after two rushes by Peters, with a pass from Taylor to Letcher in between, Peters rushed for 2, 7, 4, 7 and the 3-yard scoring touchdown with 1:49 putting the Ichabods up 20-17 following the extra point by Kameron Lake.
The RIverHawks moved the ball to the Ichabod 50 with 33 seconds to go, but did not complete the fourth and 6 turning the ball back to the Ichabods and a kneel down by Taylor finished the game recording Craig Schurig's 15th winning season at the helm of the Washburn program in his 20th season on the sidelines.
Grant Bruner and Derrick McClendon each had nine tackles and Jordan Finnesy had seven stops – all solo and Peyton Lane had six. Over the Ichabods had seven tackles for loss for 26 yards with Phoenix Smith recording the lone sack for nine yards.
Peters became the first Ichabod since he accomplished the feat himself on Nov. 13, 2021 to go over 100 yards rushing in a game recording 108 yards and two scores on 20 carries to lead the Ichabods' 171-yard rushing attack. Tyler Bowden had five carries for 49 yards.
Letcher, Jr., had 11 catches for 77 yards giving him 69 receptions this season for 888 yards. Peter Afful scored Washburn's first touchdown of the game with 13:50 left in the 2nd quarter on a 39-yard touchdown pass from Kellen Simoncic finishing with four catches for 68 yards.
Washburn outgained the RiverHawks (1-8, 1-8 MIAA) 378 to 277 in the game holding NSU to 37 yards in the third quarter and 21 net yards in the fourth quarter. The Ichabods, who were limited to 3 of 14 on third downs in the game.

SERIES HISTORY WITH NORTHEASTERN STATE
• The Ichabods lead the series 11-1 and have won the last 10 meetings.
• The Ichabods have outscored the RiverHawks 455 to 124 in 12 games - an average of 37.9 to 10.0.
• Washburn is 5-1 in road contests losing the first game played in Tahlequah on Sept. 27, 1988 - the RiverHawks' only win in the series.
• Washburn is 6-0 in games played in Topeka.
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE ICHABODS
(Nov. 4, 2023) EDMOND, Okla. – The Washburn Ichabods scored on their first drive of the game taking an early lead but Central Oklahoma scored the next 41 of the game en route to a 41-7 win on Saturday.
Washburn (1-9, 0-9 MIAA) won the toss and took the ball to start the game and marched 75 yards in 11 plays as Sam Van Dyne scored on a 1-yard run as the Ichabods went up 7-0 with 9:48 to play in the opening quarter.
For the remainder of the game the Bronchos would score on seven of their 10 drives as they snapped a two-game winning streak by the Ichabods in the series.
Washburn was outgained 491 to 240 in the game as the Ichabods has the ball for 7:26 in the entire second half running 16 total plays compared to 41 to the Bronchos.
Van Dyne finished 17 of 33 passing with two interceptions for 187 yards and Tyce Brown had a team-high four catches for 69 yards averaging 17.3 ypc. D.J. Bell had 13 carries for 41 yards.
L.J. Minner, Jr. had seven tackles adding a tackle for loss and Caeden Spencer had five tackles and Julius Jackson had five as well.
 
A WIN OVER NORTHEASTERN STATE WOULD
• move the Ichabods to 2-9 on the season.
• be the 11th in a row over the RiverHawks.
• snap Washburn's seven game-losing streak - its longest since the final seven games of the 1997 season.
• avoid the Ichabods' first winless MIAA season since the 1993 year when the Ichabods were 0-9.
 
A LOSS TO NORTHEASTERN STATE WOULD
• be the Ichabods' eighth in a row - their longest since losing the final three games of the 1981 season and the first six of the 1982 season.
• drop the Ichabods to 0-10 in MIAA play and 1-10 overall.

UP NEXT
The Ichabods will open the 2024 season on Sept. 5 at Emporia State facing their rivals right out of the gate. The Ichabods will then face Colorado Mines in a non-conference game on Sept. 14 before returning to MIAA play hosting Pittsburg State on Sept. 21.
