No. 32 Ichabods hosting Hornets on Thursday

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 32 Washburn Ichabods men's tennis hosts Emporia State on Thursday for the 104th iteration of the Turnpike Tussle at 1 p.m. at the Washburn Tennis Complex. 

Ichabod Breakdown 

  • Washburn finishes its home stretch with the Turnpike Tussle against Empoira State at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Washburn Tennis Complex. 
  • The Ichabods are 9-5, 1-1 on the season after a 4-3 loss to No. 16 Northwest Missouri State on Saturday. 
  • Empoira State enters Thursday's match at 5-5 on the year and 1-0 in conference.
  • The Ichabods are 74-29 all-time against the Hornets, the most wins over any opponent in program history. 
  • Washburn is ranked 32nd  nationally in the latest ITA Coaches Poll. 
  • The Ichabods were picked to finish second in the MIAA/GAC Preseason Coaches Poll 
  • Washburn went 17-6 in 2021-22 and earned a second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Head coach Kirby Ronning

History with the Hornets

  • Washburn and Emporia State have played 103 times in program history with the Ichabods leading the all-time series 74-29.
  • Washburn has won six matches in a row and 34 of the last 35
  • Last season the Ichabods swept the Hornets 7-0 in Emporia
  • The first match between the two teams was a 6-0 win for Washburn on April 10, 1948. 
  • Washburn is 42-12 against Empoira State in Topeka 

Schedule spring forward

  • Thursday's match against Empoira State will be the second to last MIAA/GAC North Division match of the spring for the Ichabods. It will also be senior day for the women's team. 
  • Wasburn's final home match will be on April 11 against Newman. 
  • Washburn wraps up the regular season with two matches in Arkansas, the final regular season game comes on April 15 against Southern Arkansas University
  • The Men's MIAA Tournament will take place from April 19-21
  • NCAA Regionals are scheduled to begin May 6
