No. 32 Washburn set for Sunday square off with Storm

TOPEKA, Kan. -- After three straight matches at home No. 32 Washburn men's tennis hits the road for a Sunday contest against Southeastern Oklahoma State in Edmond, Okla. beginning at 2 p.m. 
 

Ichabod Breakdown

  • Washburn begins a two-match stretch in Oklahoma with a Sunday showdown against Southeastern Oklahoma state in Edmond on April 2 at 2 p.m. 
  • The Ichabods are 10-5, 2-1 on the season after a 7-0 win over Emporia State last Tursday. 
  • The Storm enter the match with a 9-6 record. 
  • The Ichabods are 5-3 all-time against Southeastern Oklahoma State, winning the last three contests. 
  • Washburn is ranked 32nd nationally in the latest ITA Coaches Poll. 
  • The Ichabods were picked to finish second in the MIAA/GAC Preseason Coaches Poll

Head coach Kirby Ronning

  • Ronning is in his third year as head coach of the Ichabod men's and women's tennis teams
  • He has led both teams to the NCAA tournament in both seasons at the helm
  • Ronning has a combined record of 81-36 in his two plus seasons at Washburn
  • Prior to joining the Ichabods Ronning spent four seasons as the assistant coach at Azusa Pacific from 2016-2022
  • Volunteer assistant Kurt Reid and graduate assistant Raul-Alin Dicu round out the men's coaching staff

The assistants

  • Volunteer assistant Kurt Reid and graduate assistant Raul-Alin Dicu round out the men's coaching staff
  • Reid enters his fourth season as an assistant with the Ichabods.
  • He started his collegiate tennis career at Tulsa (1977-78) before transferring to Washburn for the 1978-79 season.
  • Dicu joins the Ichabods after a five-year standout career for Washburn from 2017-22
  • He finished his career with a 56-45 singles record and 53-41 doubles mark and is in the top-20 in singles and doubles wins in program history

Scouting the Storm

  • Southeastern Oklahoma State is 9-6 so far in the 2022-23 season
  • The Storm are coming off a 6-1 loss to Arkansas-Fort Smith on March  28 in Fort Smith, Ark.

 Southeastern Staff

  • Southeastern Oklahoma State is led by Brian Nelson in his fourth season in charge of the men's and women's programs for the Storm
  • Prior to joining SEOSU Nelson was the head coach at Wisconsin-Green Bay
  • He also spent 11 season at Seminole State College 
  • He is a USPTA certified recreational coach and has served as the president of the NJCAA Men's Tennis Coaches Association since 2015
  • Student assistant Brady Matthews rounds out the staff

History with Southeastern Oklahoma

  • Washburn and Southeastern Oklahoma State have faced off eight times in program history with the Ichabods holding a 5-3 advantage in the all-time series. 
  • Washburn has won the last three matches between the two teams, including a 4-3 win in Wichita Falls, Texas on March 4, 2022 last season. 
  • The Ichabods are 2-0 all-time on the road against the Storm
  • The first match between the two teams came on March 4, 2002 and was a 5-0 win for Southeastern Oklahoma in Oklahoma City. 

Schedule spring forward

  • Sunday's match against Southeastern Oklahoma State is the first of two straight for the Ichabods in the Sooner State before returning to Topeka.
  • Wasburn's final home match will be on April 11 against Newman. 
  • Washburn wraps up the regular season with two matches in Arkansas, the final regular season game comes on April 15 against Southern Arkansas University
  • The Men's MIAA Tournament will take place from April 19-21
  • NCAA Regionals are scheduled to begin May 6
