No. 23 Ichabods head to Oklahoma for ranked conference matches with Bronchos and RiverHawks

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 23 Washburn women's tennis will face two conference opponents on the road this week beginning with No. 30 Central Oklahoma on Friday followed by No. 43 Northeastern State on Saturday at 2 and 3 p.m. respectively. 

Ichabod Breakdown

  • No. 23 Washburn heads on a two match trip to Oklahoma for matches against No. 30 Central Oklahoma on Friday and No. 43 Northeastern State on Saturday. 
  • The Ichabods are 10-5 on the year after defeating Emporia State 7-0 on senior day, March 30.
  • The Bronchos 7-7, 2-2 on the season while the Riverhawks enter the week at 8-5, 3-1.
  • Washburn is ranked 23rd nationally in the latest ITA Tennis Rankings
  • Washburn is coming off a 16-12 season in 2021-22 and the second appearance in the NCAA National Championships in program history.

Head coach Kirby Ronning

  • Ronning is in his third year as head coach of the Ichabod men's and women's tennis teams
  • He has led both teams to the NCAA tournament in both seasons at the helm
  • Ronning has a combined record of 81-37 in his two plus seasons at Washburn
  • Prior to joining the Ichabods, Ronning spent four seasons as the assistant coach at Azusa Pacific from 2016-2022
  • Ronning played for Bethel University (Minn.) for four seasons and was honored with the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Sportsmanship award two times.

Schedule spring forward

  • After this weeks matchups Washburn will have one remaining MIAA match which will come against Newman in the team's home finale on April 11. 
  • Washburn wraps up the regular season with two matches in Arkansas, the final regular season game comes on April 15 against Southern Arkansas University
  • The Women's MIAA Tournament will take place from April 21-23
  • NCAA Regionals are scheduled to begin May 6 and run through May 9.

  • The Bronchos are led by Joe Vann in his second season as head coach
  • Vann led Central Oklahoma to its best season in school history. The Bronchos won a school record 24 matches. UCO won the regular season MIAA title before winning the MIAA postseason championship last season
  • The Bronchos finished as national runners-up
  • Vann came to UCO from UT Tyler, where he spent four years as the assistant coach for both men's and women's programs
  • Graduate Assistant Fleur Eggink rounds out the coaching staff

  • Washburn and Central Oklahoma have played 18 times in history with the Bronchos leading the all-time series 14-4
  • The Ichabods are 1-7 against UCO on the road and 1-8 in conference 
  • The Bronchos have won the last six matches including a 4-0 win against Washburn last season in the NCAA Championships to end the Ichabods season
  • The first match between the two was a 9-0 loss for the Ichabods in Topeka on April 12, 1998.

  • McLane came to Tahlequah in December 2020 from USC Upstate (Spartanburg, S.C.), where he was the head coach for both men's and women's tennis programs for two seasons
