TEMPE, Ariz. – The Washburn women's tennis team finished ranked 17th in the final ITA poll of the 2022-23 season after completing the year with a record of 18-7 (6-2 MIAA), winning the MIAA Tournament, and advancing to the NCAA National Quarterfinals for the first time in program history.
The Ichabods were ranked in the top-30 of the national poll for the entire season and also boasted a pair of individuals in the rankings. In the final set of singles rankings, senior
Sonia Smagina checked in at No. 2 overall. The MIAA Player of the Year finished her season with the Ichabods with a singles record of 30-3 while going 21-2 at the No. 1 spot and had a perfect 7-0 mark in conference play. Against nationally ranked opponents, she was 10-2 and she moved up to the No. 1-ranked singles player in Division II on March 21.
Also finishing ranked in the top-20 in singles was junior
Maja Jung at No. 17. She went 23-9 in singles action playing primarily at No. 2 where she went 15-6 and earned All-MIAA first team honors. Jung was 3-2 against nationally ranked opponents, including a three-set win over the No. 9-ranked singles player from No. 5 Flagler in the NCAA National Quarterfinal match.
Smagina and Jung were also doubles partners during the season and finished fifth in the final doubles rankings. The duo received an All-MIAA first team selection at No. 1 doubles and compiled a record of 19-3 at the top of the lineup while also going undefeated in conference play. They won nine of their last 10 matches they played together and went 6-3 against nationally ranked opponents.
The ITA will officially announce the student-athletes who earned All-American honors at a later date.
