TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn women's tennis begins ITA competition this weekend at the ITA Central Region Championships hosted in Edmond, Okla. at Edmond Center Court.
First Serve
- ITA play begins for Washburn women's tennis this weekend at the ITA Central Region Championships in Edmond, Okla. at Edmond Center Court.
- Tournament play will begin the morning on Friday, Sept. 19 and run through championship Sunday on Sept. 21.
- Last season the Ichabods made another appearance in the NCAA Tournament going 17-4 overall and 8-1 in the MIAA to share the MIAA Regular Season Championship.
- Washburn's 2025-26 roster features eight players with two seniors, one junior, three sophomores and a pair of freshmen.
- The tournament features players from every team in the region.
Pairings and Draws
- Seven of eight Ichabods will compete in the tournament.
- Jasel Bailey will face Clare Plachy of Nebraska Kearney in singles at 8 a.m. on Friday.
- Saajida Razick takes on Jolina Mass from Southern Arkansas at 8 a.m.
- Riko Konno also begins at 8 a.m. facing Ella Hancock from Sioux Falls.
- Charlotte Bair will dual with Mariana Jimenez from Newman at 8 a.m.
- Renske Ubachs will serve later, beginning at 9:15 a.m. against Brooke Coffman of Harding.
- Peyton Koper will also start at 9:15, squaring off with Renata Morales from Northeastern State.
- Daniela Tijaro faces Elis Gergel from Arkansas Tech, also starting at 9:15 a.m.
- In doubles, Renske Ubachs and Daniela Tijaro are matched up against Yone Pereiro and Molly Gaddis from Fort Hays State. They will begin at 5:15 p.m. on Friday.
- Saajida Razick and Riko Konno will take on Roksana Kokocha and Taylor Conway from Southern Arkansas at 5:15 p.m.
- Jasel Bailey and Peyton Koper are faced off against Jennifer Pfaeffin and Karli Gay from Ouachita Baptist at 5:15 p.m.

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn women's tennis finished a dominant showing on the second and final day of the Washburn Invite. After wrapping the fall home opener, the Ichabods will play at the ITA Central Region Tournament beginning Friday, Sept. 19 in Edmond, Okla.
In the main draw for doubles Renske Ubachs and Daniela Tijaro pulled away late to win an 8-7(4) battle. Saajida Razick and Riko Konno moved much quicker, winning 8-1. The would-be all-Washburn championship match was abandoned.
With all original draw pairings being abandoned for singles, some of the Ichabods competed in extra singles matches. Maddie Shelley, Daniela Tijaro, Jasel Bailey and Riko Konno each picked up a two-set singles victory on the day.
Head Coach Kirby Ronning
- Ronning is in year six as the head coach of the men's and women's tennis teams at Washburn
- Has led both teams to the NCAA Tournament in every season at the helm with a 176-60 combined record with Washburn.
- Has been named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year four times and the MIAA Coach of the Year twice.
- Prior to joining the Ichabods Ronning spent four seasons as the assistant coach at Azusa Pacific from 2016-2022.
- As a player, he played for four years at Bethel University (Minn.). Ronning received his bachelor's degree in Business from Bethel in 2014 and earned his master's degree in Physical Education at Azusa Pacific in May 2020.
The Assistants
- Kurt Reid enters year seven as a volunteer assistant coach for the Ichabods. Reid started his collegiate tennis career at Tulsa (1977-78) before transferring to Washburn for the 1978-79 season.
- A Topeka-native, Reid played tennis at Topeka West High School and was elected to the Topeka West Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.
- Graduate assistant Santiago Renton is entering his 2nd season as part of the Washburn coaching staff.
- He moved from playing to the sidelines after wrapping up three seasons with the Ichabods headlined by an ITA Cup Doubles National Championship in fall of 2023.
- Maja Jung also is entering year two on the coaching staff as a graduate assistant for the women's program.
- Jung was an All-American in both singles and doubles and is 2nd in program history in career victories.
FALLING FORWARD
- Before the ITA Cup, Washburn will head to Omaha, Neb. for the Omaha Invitational running from Oct. 3-5.
- The next home appearance will come on Oct. 24 for the Washburn Invitational at the Kossover Tennis Center in the final tournament of the fall.
