BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team went 1-1 on the first day of the Alvy Early Memorial Classic falling in the opener to Upper Iowa 6-4 before taking the nightcap 6-2. Washburn returns to action with two more games on Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
Game 1 - Upper Iowa 6, WU 4
The Peacocks (1-5) jumped out to a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third before the Ichabods scored on an RBI by
Erin Boles scoring
Kate Ediger as Washburn was down 3-1.
Neither team scored until the fifth when
Makenzie Sais scored when
Ellington Hogle singled to left after drawing a 2-out walk.
In the sixth, a three-run homer with two outs helped out by a pair of walks pushed the Peacock lead to 6-2. Washburn scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI by Boles and a pinch-high RBI from
Danielle Schlader, but washburn did not get any closer.
Alexis Tanguma recorded two hits and Boles finished with 2 RBI.
Ava Bloyd pitched four innings striking out four.
Game 2 - Washburn 6, Southeastern Oklahoma St. 2
The Ichabods (4-3) scored two runs in the fourth and four in the fifth leading to a 6-2 win over the Storm in game two.
Washburn scored its first run on a third inning lead-off home by Ediger and then an RBI double by
Kaylee Wagner scored Sais as the Ichabods took a 2-0 lead.
After a scores fourth, the Ichabods started the frame with back-to-back singles by Boles and Sais and foloowing a walk by Wagner, a 2-RBI double by Hogle drove in two and then another double from Tanguma scored two more putting Washburn up 6-0.
The Storm scored a pair of unearned runs in the seventh trimming the lead to four but Washburn starter
Sadie Walker closed down the game improving to 3-1 in the circle striking out three.
Sais, Tanguma and Ediger each had two hits for Washburn and both Hogle and Tanguma had 2 RBI.
