SOFTBALL PREVIEW

Washburn softball back on the road for final regular season roadtrip of season

FIRST PITCH
• The Washburn Ichabods return to the road with a pair of MIAA doubleheaders starting Friday at Missouri Western followed by another twin bill at Northwest Missouri the following day.
• The Ichabods (27-16, 9-7 MIAA) went 3-1 last week splitting a doubleheader with Central Missouri before sweeping Newman.
• Washburn is coming off their sixth NCAA appearance in program history last season finishing the year with a 37-17 record placing fourth in the MIAA standings with a 17-9 record.
• The Washburn Ichabods have recorded 19 seasons with at least 30 wins with five coming under head coach Brenda  Holaday.
• The Ichabods were tabbed No. 4 in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll.
Brenda Holaday is in her ninth season as the Ichabod softball head coach recording a 279-165 overall record going 132-70 in MIAA contests leading the Ichabods to two MIAA Regular Season titles (2018, 2022) and three NCAA Central Regional (2018, 2022, 2024). Holaday became Washburn's all-time winning coach with a 13-0 win over Illinois-Springfield on Feb. 8, 2025.

ICHABOD NOTES
• The Ichabods lead the nation in the triple plays recording their second one of the season in Branson … Washburn is also 14th in the nation in walks this season.
Sadie Walker is seventh in the nation in games started (22), eighth in appearances (28) and 22nd in shutouts (4) while also ranking 45th in strikeouts (111).
Jenna Sprague is 26th in the nation with four saves.
Mariah Wheeler is 13th in the nation and leading the MIAA in the toughest to strikeout category.
 
NOTHING BUT NUMBERS
In 2025, Washburn is outscoring its opponents 38-19 in the sixth inning and 64-35 in the second inning but is being outscored 37-34 in the fourth inning and 38-19 in the third inning and 19-12 in the seventh inning … Washburn is 9-3 in shutouts … the Ichabods are 21-1 when leading after four innings, 17-1 when leading after five innings and 22-2 when leading after six innings … Erin Boles and Makenzie Sais lead the Ichabods with 12 multiple-hit games and Kaylee Wagner leads the team with 12 multi-RBI games … Sais leads the Ichabods in MIAA play with a .386 batting average.

LAST TIME OUT
(April 7, 2025) TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods pounded out 25 hits scoring 15 runs in a doubleheader sweep over the Newman Jets on Monday afternoon wrapping up an eight-game homestand. Washburn will be on the road with MIAA contests at Missouri Western on April 11 and at Northwest Missouri on April 12.
Game 1 – WU 8, NU 0 (5 innings)
After a scoreless first inning, the Ichabods (27-16, 9-7 MIAA) scored three runs in the bottom of the second capped Dalaney Anderson's first collegiate home run, a three-run shot that scored Kate Ediger and Danielle Schlader.
In the third, the Ichabods added three more runs on another 3-run homer, this time by Jaden LaBarge scoring Erin Boles and Ashlyn Gaughan.
Washburn's final runs came in the following inning when Boles connected on a two-out double sending Ellington Hogle and Makenzie Sais who both reached on singles.
Alexis Tanguma picked up the win in the opener over the Jets (6-32, 1-13 MIAA) tossing all five innings scattering three hits.
Washburn finished with nine hits with four different Ichabods (Hogle, Sais, Boles, LaBarge) all recording two.
Game 2 – WU 7, NU 0
As in the first game, the Ichabods jumped on the board in the bottom of the second inning when LaBarge homered in her third-straight game with a shot down the left field line. Mariah Wheeler followed with a double and then with two outs, Hogle doubled to left scoring Ediger as Washburn went up 2-0.
Washburn platted a solo run in the fourth when Wagner's sac fly scored Hogle after starting the inning with a single.
The Ichabods added three more runs in the fifth inning when Hogle's hit to center was misplayed scoring both Maddie McGee and Ediger. Kate Dolan then recorded a pinch-hit double scoring Hogle as Washburn went up 7-0.
Sadie Walker moved to 13-6 in the circle pitching four innings allowing one hit. Jenna Sprague tossed the final three innings for her fourth save of the season, allowing one hit.
Washburn finished with a season-high 16 hits in the win led by Hogle's three hits and 3 RBI. Sais, Tanguma, LaBarge and Wheeler each had two hits..

OPPONENTS QUICK SCOUT
MISSOURI WESTERN
• The Griffons are 21-16 and 8-8 in the MIAA.
• Mackenzie DeVine leads the team with a .330 batting average and Myah Dwyer is batting .298.
• Sydney Rader is 15-6 with a 1.72 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP with 129 strikeouts in 134 innings pitched.
• The Ichabods lead the all-time series 56-52 winning the last two games played.
 
NORTHWEST MISSOURI
• The Bearcats are 15-22 this season and 5-11 in the MIAA.
• Lillie Filger leads the team in batting with .415 with 54 hits and 30 runs scored adding 15 stolen bases.
• Rien Moore is 5-4 in the circle with a 3.61 ERA.
• Washburn leads the all-time series 62-37
• The Ichabods have won the last four games against the Bearcats.
 
HEAD COACH BRENDA HOLADAY
• is 279-165 in her ninth season as the Ichabod head softball coach and is the all-time winningest coach in program history.
• in nine seasons Holaday has gone 132-70 in MIAA contests leading the Ichabods to two MIAA regular season championships in 2018 and 2022 while leading the program to three of its six NCAA postseason in 2018, 2022 and 2024.
• in 2022, the Ichabods won their third MIAA Championship going 24-2 in the MIAA reaching the MIAA Tournament Championship game and the NCAA postseason as Holaday was named the MIAA Coach of the Year for the second time in her tenure at Washburn.
• overall in nine seasons, Washburn has had 39 all-MIAA picks, one MIAA Player of the Year, one MIAA Pitcher of the Year, two MIAA Freshmen of the Year and 18 all-region selections and six All-American picks and five members of the MIAA Gold Glove team.
• coached 19 seasons at Washburn Rural High School in Topeka compiling a 351-93 record.
• led the Junior Blues to three 6A state championships as well as winning 14 league championships earning 16 6A state tournament berths, five second-place state finishes and three third-place state finishes and was inducted into the Washburn Rural High School Hall of Fame in 2018.

WASHBURN ICHABOD SOFTBALL HISTORY
• The Ichabods are 1355-988-1 in their 55th year of softball.
• The Ichabods have made six NCAA Tournament appearances (1999, 2006, 2008, 2018, 2022).
• Washburn won the 2002, 2018 and 2022 regular season MIAA titles.
 
UP NEXT
Washburn returns home for the final four regular season games of the season hosting Central Oklahoma on April 18 and then celebrate senior day on April 26 against Emporia State.
