Ichabods split pair of games to open Drury Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Washburn split a pair of games to open the Drury Invitational all day Friday as they fell 16-13 in the opener to Indianapolis before bouncing back to win 7-5 under the lights against Missouri S&T. They return to action at 2:30 on Saturday against Drury.  

Game one: UIndy 16, Washburn 13 

After falling behind early Washburn pulled in front in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by Jack Borgmann followed by a double steal later on that made it 2-1. Indianapolis scored one in the fourth to tie and plated eight runs in the fifth to lead 10-2. Borgmann hit a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth but the Greyhounds answered right back with one more in the sixth.  

Each side scored three runs in the seventh, the Ichabods got runs on a single by Jackson Mervosh, followed by a sacrifice fly from Levi Risenhoover and a two-out single by Trenton Barry.  

In the eighth inning Washburn cut into the deficit, scoring one on a wild pitch. They added two more on an RBI groundout by Risenhoover and a balk. Owen Laessig scored one with a double and was brought home on a single from Barry. Garrett Springer made it 14-12 as he laced a double into left field. 

A two-out single from UIndy scored two in the top of the ninth. The Ichabods got one across as Beeby picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice but Washburn couldn't complete the comeback, falling 16-13. 

Indianapolis out-hit the Ichabods 16-14 in the game but committed four errors while Washburn had zero. Eleven walks for the Greyhounds provided an advantage with just seven for the Ichabods.  

Eight pitchers took the mound for Washburn combining for six strikeouts. Scout Jellison and Kyle Snyder each pitched scoreless innings.  

At the plate Jack Borgmann went 4-4 with a walk, two RBI and scored five runs. Jackson Mervosh went 3-4 with an RBI and a walk as well. Trenton Barry and Brandt Beeby each had multi-hit days.  

Game two: Washburn 7, Missouri S&T 5 

Maclane Finley got the ball in game two for the Ichabods and tossed three scoreless innings against the Miners to begin the game, allowing just one hit in that span. Missouri S&T was able to string together three hits in the fourth inning to put two runs on the board in the fourth.  

The Washburn offense came alive in the fifth beginning with a one-out triple by Barry. He was scored on a double for Brooks Richardson. Ian Luce traded places with him and two batters later Beeby laced a triple into left center to score two more. Risenhoover hit a sacrifice fly to cap off a five-run inning. 

In the sixth, an error extended the inning at the plate for the Ichabods, as they scored one run on an error. Luce added another with a two-out single to make it 7-2. With two outs in the bottom of the inning an error in the field allowed the Miners an extra opportunity, which they cashed in for three runs back to pull within two.  

Gavin Wilhelm took over on the mound in the seventh inning. He tossed two scoreless frames, striking out four to send it to the ninth. In the ninth Fidel Hatch retired the side in order to earn the 7-5 win and save. 

Washburn out-hit Missouri S&T 11-5 in the game, doing damage with the bats while working just three walks. Four pitchers combined for eight strikeouts in the game. Maclane Finley went 5.2 innings allowing two earned runs and striking out three.  

At the plate Ian Luce went 3-5 with two RBI while Jackson Mervosh, Brandt Beeby and Trenton Barry all had multi-hit games.
