PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabod men's and women's track and field team multi-event athletes opened the first of three days of the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Robert W. Plaster Center on the campus of Pittsburg State University.
Washburn's
Naiuri Krein finished second in the pentathlon scoring eight team points earning all-MIAA honors, tallying 3,934 total points, breaking her own Washburn school record. She opened with a third-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking an 8.94 to score 922 points. She followed that with a tie for second in the high jump, clearing 1.61 meters (5-3.25) for 747 points.
Krein surged to the top of the standings in the shot put, winning the event with a throw of 13.19 meters (43-3.25) to add 740 points. She added another third-place finish in the long jump at 5.62 meters (18-5.25), scoring 735 points, before closing her day with a 2:22.50 in the 800 meters for 790 points. Her all-around consistency kept her firmly in contention heading into the final standings of the competition.
Vera Gerasimova finished ninth in the pentathlon, opening with a 9.43 in the 60-meter hurdles. She cleared 1.55 meters (5-1) in the high jump, threw 10.25 meters (33-7.50) in the shot put and recorded a leap of 5.27 meters (17-3.50) in the long jump. She capped her day with a 2:31.90 in the 800 meters to round out her five-event total.
On the men's side, in the heptathlon, Washburn has
Alex Michiels,
Judah Bowell and
Drew McGilton ranking third, fourth and fifth after four events after the first day of action.
Drew McGilton led the Ichabods with a 7.14 finish for 833 points, while
Judah Bowell (7.23) and
Alex Michiels (7.23) each added 802 points.
Bowell delivered one of the top marks of the day in the long jump, winning the event with a leap of 7.01 meters (23-0) to score 816 points. McGilton followed with a 6.82-meter jump (22-4.50) for 771 points, and Michiels added 736 points with a 6.67-meter effort (21-10.75).
In the shot put, Bowell again paced Washburn with a throw of 12.18 meters (39-11.50) for 617 points. Michiels added 568 points with an 11.37-meter toss, and McGilton scored 533 points with a mark of 10.79 meters (35-5).
The Ichabods closed the day strong in the high jump. Michiels cleared 2.00 meters (6-6.75) to finish second overall in the event and score 803 points. McGilton matched 1.88 meters (6-2) for 696 points, while Bowell added 644 points with a clearance of 1.82 meters (5-11.50).
Michiels has 2,909 points after the first day followed by Bowell with 2,879 and McGilton with 2833 points. Leo Chauchard has 3,082 points leading the heptathlon with three events to go.
