No. 9 Washburn begins Florida trip taking on No. 5 Embry-Riddle on Monday

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 9 Washburn women's tennis plays a second straight top-10 opponent as they take on No. 5 Embry-Riddle at 1 p.m. CST on Monday in Daytona Beach to begin a four-match swing in Florida. 
 

FIRST SERVE

  • No. 9 Washburn heads on the road for a top-10 meeting facing No. 5 Embry-Riddle. 
  • The Ichabods will face the Eagles at 1 p.m. CST on Monday, March 2 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
  • Washburn moved to 3-0 on the year with a 4-2 win over No. 8 Midwestern State last time out on Feb. 22.
  • Embry-Riddle improved to 10-0 on the year defeating Tampa 6-1 last time out on Feb. 28.

BODS AND BITS 

  • Washburn's 2025-26 roster features six returners from a season ago with three new incoming freshmen to round out the roster.  
  • The Ichabods moved up to No. 9 in the latest ITA rankings.
  • Washburn was picked to finish first in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll. 
  • The Ichabods are is coming off a 17-4 season where they went 8-1 in the MIAA to win a share of the MIAA Regular Season Championship. They qualified for the NCAA Tournament for a 21st time in program history.
  • So far on the year Washburn is 3-0 when playing at home and they have not played a dual match on the road or in a neutral court meeting.
  • The Ichabods are 1-0 against ranked opponents this season.

AROUND THE RANKINGS

SINGLES SETUP

  • So far on the season Washburn has gone 70-15 (82.4%) in singles matches.
  • After winning the ITA Central Region Championship, Renske Ubachs leads the team with a 14-2 singles record and is 2-0 playing at No. 1. 
  • Riko Konno has gone 12-1 on the year to begin her freshman season and is 3-0 at No. 2.She is 2-0 against ranked opponents.
  • Daniela Tijaro has compiled a 9-4 record in singles play to begin the year and has gone 2-1 playing at No. 3.  
  • Saajida Razick is off to a 9-1 start in singles competition and is 2-0 at No. 5.
  • Jasel Bailey has picked up where she left off last season to begin the season 10-1 overall and 3-0 playing at No. 4. 
  • Charlotte Bair is 9-2 on the year in singles play and has gone 2-0 at the six spot in singles. 
  • Maddie Shelley has began the season 5-0 playing in tournaments. 
  • Peyton Koper is 3-4 on the singles side to open the season.

DOUBLES DOWNLOAD

  • The Ichabods have gone 29-9 (76.3%) on the year in doubles matches this season. 
  • Renske Ubachs and Daniela Tijaro have the most victories of any doubles duo on the team going 10-3 to begin the season and 2-1 at No. 1. 
  • Saajida Razick and Riko Konno have teamed up to go 6-1 together. 
  • Riko Konno Peyton Koper are 1-2 playing together in duals at No. 2 and No. 3.
  • Jasel Bailey and Saajida Razick have gone 2-1 together this season on courts two and three. 
  • Ubachs and Tijaro are tied for the team lead with ten doubles victories.

LAST TIME OUT

Washburn 4, Midwestern State 2 (February 22, 2026)

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 11 Washburn returned to the courts for the first time in two weeks and turned in a 4-2 win over No. 8 Midwestern State on Sunday afternoon inside the Genesis Tennis Center. The Ichabods are back in action in an exhibition against Pratt CC on Friday, Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. 

Doubles play began with Washburn (3-0) gaining the advantage after Jasel Bailey and Saajida Razick worked a 6-1 win at No. 3. The Mustangs (3-1) evened the first stage up winning 6-2 at court two over Peyton Koper and Riko Konno. No. 4 Renske Ubachs and Daniela Tijaro led early on the top court but could not hold on, falling 6-4 as Midwestern State went up 1-0 in the match.  

Charlotte Bair led off singles play by getting the point back, winning two quick sets 6-2 and 6-1 at No. 6. Saajida Razick followed closely behind, winning by the same scores on court five to put the Ichabods in front. No. 40 Riko Konno played an extra game before winning 7-5 in her opening set at No. 2. She repeated the same in the second set, winning 7-5 over No. 42 Emilia Gyorgy to set up match point.  

Playing on court three, No. 48 Daniela Tijaro fell 3-6 in her opening set before sweeping the second 6-0 to even up the dual. She fell 6-1 in the third as Midwestern State got on the board in singles play. Jasel Bailey took a 6-3 loss in her first set at No. 4. She bounced back to win 6-1 in the second and came from behind in the third to run away with a 6-3 win, clinching the match.  

No. 14 Renske Ubachs was tied at 2-2 in the third set of her match at No. 1 against No. 10 Selin Sepken when the match was decided.  

HEAD COACH KIRBY RONNING

  • Ronning is in year six as the head coach of the men's and women's tennis teams at Washburn  
  • Has led both teams to the NCAA Tournament in every season at the helm with a 183-62 combined record with Washburn.
  • Has been named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year four times and the MIAA Coach of the Year twice. 
  • Prior to joining the Ichabods Ronning spent four seasons as the assistant coach at Azusa Pacific from 2016-2022.
  • As a player, he played for four years at Bethel University (Minn.). Ronning received his bachelor's degree in Business from Bethel in 2014 and earned his master's degree in Physical Education at Azusa Pacific in May 2020.

THE ASSISTANTS

  • Kurt Reid enters year seven as a volunteer assistant coach for the Ichabods. Reid started his collegiate tennis career at Tulsa (1977-78) before transferring to Washburn for the 1978-79 season.
  • A Topeka-native, Reid played tennis at Topeka West High School and was elected to the Topeka West Sports Hall of Fame in 2015. 
  • Graduate assistant Santiago Renton is entering his 2nd season as part of the Washburn coaching staff.  
  • He moved from playing to the sidelines after wrapping up three seasons with the Ichabods headlined by an ITA Cup Doubles National Championship in fall of 2023. 
  • Maja Jung also is entering year two on the coaching staff as a graduate assistant for the women's program. 
  • Jung was an All-American in both singles and doubles and is 2nd in program history in career victories.

ABOUT THE EMBRY-RIDDLE EAGLES

  • Embry-Riddle stayed perfect at 10-0 defeating Tampa 6-1 last time out on Feb. 28.
  • Last season the Eagles went 20-7 overall and 7-2 in the SSC. They lost in the first round of the NCAA South Regional
  • They rank No. 5 in the latest ITA national rankings.
  • This year they are 5-0 playing at home in Daytona Beach, 4-0 on the road and 1-0 in neutral court matches.
  • Embry-Riddle is 94-34 (73.4%) in singles duals on the year. 
  • Franziska Kremerskothen is 13-4 on the year while going 2-0 at No. 4.
  • In doubles the Eagles have gone 51-21 (70.8%) overall.
  • Ashley Moinard and Mariana Cabrera are 6-2 together overall and 2-0 at No. 2.

EAGLE COACHING STAFF

  • Chad Berryhill is in his 3rd season as the head women's tennis coach at Embry-Riddle.
  • Berryhill came to Embry-Riddle from Saint Leo bringing with him a track record of success at various levels of college tennis. An eight-year head coach at Saint Leo, he led the men's team to six NCAA II national tournament appearances.
  • A native of Lansing, Michigan, Berryhill has been coaching at the collegiate level since 2005 when he was named the head coach of the Hillsborough Community College women's tennis program
  • Assistant coaches Sabrina Ehrenfort and Maissane Aik round out the coaching staff.

HISTORY WITH EMBRY-RIDDLE

  • Monday's meeting will be the first ever match between the two teams.

MILESTONE MARKERS

  • Maddie Shelley is one doubles victory away from reaching 40 career doubles wins. 
  • Peyton Koper needs two more wins in doubles to reach 40 in her career.

SCHEDULE SPRING FORWARD

  • Washburn will play against Charleston on Wednesday as they continue their Florida trip.
  • MIAA play for the Ichabods begins with a March 27 match against Newman in Wichita. 
  • Senior day for Washburn takes plan on April 18 with a 2:30 p.m. match against Northwest Missouri. 
  • The MIAA Championship Tournament takes place in Springfield, Mo. at the Cooper Tennis Complex from May 1-3.
