Ichabod men's track and field team sits 2nd after day one of action at MIAA Championships

PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The first day of the MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships produced strong performances across the track, field and combined events, highlighted by a conference championship, as the Ichabods sit in second place in the team scoring after day one.

Distance racing set the tone in the evening as Donald Kibet captured the 10,000m title, claiming the MIAA championship in 29:58.63. Kibet sealed the victory with an impressive 56.35-second final lap, earning all-MIAA honors and securing 10 team points. Teammates Tommy Roehl picked up all-MIAA honors by placing third, and Lukas Mehl added to the scoring, finishing sixth. Roehl had a personal-best 30:04.35 to score six points, while Mehl finished fifth in a personal-best 30:37.62, contributing four points. The Ichabod 10,000m squad accounted for all 20 points for the Ichabods in the open day of action.

The sprint events also qualified several to the finals after the prelims on Friday. In the 100m prelims, Tayveon Simms posted a personal-best 10.42, finishing second overall and earning an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Simms advanced comfortably to the finals alongside Ja'Laveyn January, who placed ninth in 10.58. Peyton Holmes rounded out the trio in 15th at 11.15.

Hurdles action saw Jake Muller advance in the 400m hurdles, finishing third in the prelims with a personal-best 52.20. The performance also met the NCAA provisional standard.

In the field events, Colin Heatherman placed ninth with a personal-best mark of 57.55 meters (188-10). The throw marked an NCAA provisional throw. Holmes also competed in the long jump, finishing 12th with a personal-best leap of 6.98 meters (22-10.75).

Day one concluded with the opening half of the decathlon, where Alex Michiels sits in third after five events. Michiels totaled 3,432 points, fueled by a victory in the high jump (2.00m) and top-five finishes across the board. Emeka Ogbonna, competing in his first decathlon, ended the day in sixth with 2,821 points, highlighted by a third-place finish in the 100m and consistent scoring performances.
