TOPEKA, Kan. -- The MIAA Tournament begins for the No. 17 Washburn women in the semifinals with a meeting against No. 40 Northwest Missouri at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 2 at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo.

- No. 17 Washburn women's tennis will get a rematch of last season's MIAA Tournament Semifinals facing off with No. 40 Northwest Missouri in the same round for a second straight season.
- The Ichabods will face the Bearcats at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 2 in the semifinal round of the MIAA Tournament at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo.
- Washburn won a share of a 7th MIAA Regular Season Championship with a 7-0 win over Northeastern State to wrap up the regular season. They enter the tournament with a 17-3 record overall after going 8-1 in the MIAA.

TOPEKA, Kan. -- No. 18 Washburn swept its way to the seventh MIAA Regular Season Championship in program history defeating Northeastern State 7-0 in the regular season finale on Saturday morning. After winning a share of a 2nd straight title the Ichabods will enter the MIAA Tournament as a top-two seed in Springfield, Mo. beginning Saturday, May 2.Â
Jasel Bailey and Saajida Razick led off the match sweeping their dual at No. 1 with a 6-0 victory. Mariana Silva Balsa and Daniela Tijaro followed suit on court two, clinching doubles for Washburn (17-3, 8-1 MIAA). Riko Konno and Resnke Ubachs took the final two games of their dual to win 6-4 at No. 3 and make it a doubles sweep. Â
In singles competition No. 28 Renske Ubachs led off winning 6-3 and 6-1 sets on the top court. No. 58 Riko Konno cruised to a 6-1 opening set win before taking a 6-3 victory in the second to bring up match point against the RiverHawks (12-9, 5-4 MIAA). Saajida Razick secured the match winning 6-2 and 6-1 sets on court five. Â
Daniela Tijaro added another point from No. 3 winning 6-2 in the first set before battling for a 6-4 second set win. Jasel Bailey opened with a 6-4 win then swept her second set on court four. Mariana Silva Balsa wrapped up the match winning 6-2 in the first set and 6-1 in the second from court six. Â
HEAD COACH KIRBY RONNING
- Ronning is in year six as the head coach of the men's and women's tennis teams at Washburn Â
- Has led both teams to the NCAA Tournament in every season at the helm with a 111-68 combined record with Washburn.
- Has been named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year four times and the MIAA Coach of the Year twice.Â
- Prior to joining the Ichabods Ronning spent four seasons as the assistant coach at Azusa Pacific from 2016-2022.
- As a player, he played for four years at Bethel University (Minn.). Ronning received his bachelor's degree in Business from Bethel in 2014 and earned his master's degree in Physical Education at Azusa Pacific in May 2020.
THE ASSISTANTS
- Kurt Reid enters year seven as a volunteer assistant coach for the Ichabods. Reid started his collegiate tennis career at Tulsa (1977-78) before transferring to Washburn for the 1978-79 season.
- A Topeka-native, Reid played tennis at Topeka West High School and was elected to the Topeka West Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.Â
- Graduate assistant Santiago Renton is entering his 2nd season as part of the Washburn coaching staff. Â
- He moved from playing to the sidelines after wrapping up three seasons with the Ichabods headlined by an ITA Cup Doubles National Championship in fall of 2023.Â
- Maja Jung also is entering year two on the coaching staff as a graduate assistant for the women's program.Â
- Jung was an All-American in both singles and doubles and is 2nd in program history in career victories.Â
