Tessa Jones led the fifth-ranked Lady Blues with a career-high 26 kills as Washburn defeated Rockhurst, 3-1 (30-14, 30-24, 27-30, 30-27) Tuesday night in Lee Arena.
Washburn will return to MIAA play Friday with a 7 p.m. match at Pittsburg State and then head to Missouri Southern Saturday for a 2 p.m. match.
The win extended the match winning streak to 25 straight but the Hawks halted the game winning streak at 29 games after they won game 3. That also stopped the school record of eight straight 3-0 sweeps for the Lady Blues.
Jones hit .438 on the night with 26 kills in 48 attempts with five errors.
Monica Miesner had a double-double with 19 kills and 16 digs and
Stephanie Nitz had 13 kills with nine blocks.
Kate Hampson set 66 assists, one off her career high but enough to set a school record for a four-game match since rally scoring began. She also moved into third all-time at Washburn with 2,617 in her second year.
Erica Cowhick led Washburn with 26 digs while Jones and Hampson each recorded double-doubles after adding 10 digs apiece.
With game four tight with the Lady Blues leading, 20-19, Jones took over and scored five of Washburn's final 10 points with kills to lead to a 30-27 win in the clinching game. Jones had 11 kills in that game.
The Lady Blues started the match on fire, taking a 10-1 lead and then building it to 24-8 before winning game one 30-14.
Game two went Washburn's way after seven tie scores and then in game three the Lady Blues again led early and built an 18-13 lead. The Hawks battled back and tied the score at 26-26 and then after Washburn went up a point RU scored the final four points to break Washburn's game winning streak and force game 4.
Despite being out-hit in the fourth game, the Lady Blues were able to hold on for the win.
Washburn hit .321 in the match while Rockhurst had a .211 percentage. The Lady Blues had an 11-8 lead in blocking and led in kills, 81-65.
