Ichabods look to even MIAA record with trip to Northwest Missouri Saturday
The Ichabods will look for their second MIAA win when they travel to Northwest Missouri State Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. game at Bearcat Arena. Washburn fell to 9-3 and 1-2 in the conference after a 77-75 loss at Emporia State Wednesday while the 16th-ranked Bearcats improved to 10-2 and 2-1 with a 73-60 win at Missouri Western.

• Angel Santiago leads the Ichabods with 12.5 points a game and has reached double figures in eight straight games.

Paul Byers needs four more blocks to move into a tie for sixth in WU school history. He has 58 in three years.

About the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats
The 16th-ranked Bearcats are 10-2 this year and in a three-way tied for second in the MIAA with a 2-1 record. Their two losses have come at home to Southwest Baptist in their conference opener and earlier to future MIAA member Nebraska-Omaha. Hunter Henry leads the team with 13.9 points a game, 6.3 rebounds and he's shooting 56 percent from the field, third best in the league. Lance Sullivan is second on the team with 12.0 points a game and he leads with 32 assists.
WU-NWMSU series notes
• In the 82nd meeting between the two schools, Washburn leads the all-time series 50-31 in the series that dates back to 1940-41.
• The Bearcats have won the last four, sweeping the previous two season series.
• In last year's 87-85 double overtime loss at NWMSU, the Ichabods set a school and MIAA record with their fifth overtime game of the year.
• Washburn is 10-7 at NWMSU since joining the MIAA in 1989-90. The Ichabods last win in the series was February 16, 2005 in an 80-69 victory in Maryville.
• The two teams have met on the court at least once every year since the 1989-90 season.

Ichabods hoping to knock off Bearcats on the road
The Ichabods will bring a 1-3 road record to Maryville Saturday as they face the 16th-ranked Bearcats. Northwest Missouri State is 10-2 this year but suffered both of its losses at home. The Ichabods are second in the MIAA in scoring (85.2 points per game) and 3-point field goal percentage (.390) while the Bearcats are second in the conference in scoring defense, allowing just 59.2 points a game. Northwest Missouri gave up a season-high 80 points in its loss to UNO, but hasn't allowed more than 67 in its three MIAA games. Washburn averages 75.2 points on the road with Angel Santiago leading with 15.5 per game.
Santiago is coming off the bench to lead the team in scoring
Junior guard Angel Santiago has reached double figures in scoring in his last eight games, all of the bench, after he led the team with 18 Wednesday at Emporia State. In a pair of games last week he averaged 21.5 points a game. He scored a season-high 21 at Missouri Western last Wednesday and then bettered that by a point with 22 Saturday against Central Missouri. Santiago was 7 of 14 with four 3-pointers at MWSU and then against UCM he was 6 of 11 from the field, 3 for 6 from long distance and 7 of 8 from the free throw line.
In his last eight games he is scoring 15.1 points a game and in his last three, WU's first three MIAA games, he is scoring 20.3 points a game off 46 percent shooting from the field and 44 percent from 3-point range.
Santiago leads the team in scoring with 12.5 points a game and he's second with 20 steals and 38 assists. He is shooting 44 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3-point range overall.
Point guard Mario Scott leads the Ichabods offense
Sophomore guard
Mario Scott has started every game this year at the point for the Ichabods. He leads the team with 54 assists and he's second in the MIAA with 4.5 per game. He had five assists at ESU Wednesday and last week at Missouri Western he had 10 assists to become the first Ichabod to reach double figures since Jerad Head did it in 2004-05. Scott also leads the team with 25 steals and 2.1 per game, sixth best in the league. Scott scored a season-high 18 points against Lincoln and has reached double figures five times. He is averaging 8.5 points and 3.9 rebounds.
James Williams second on the team in scoring
Junior guard
James Williams is second on the team with 10.8 points. After he scored 14 at ESU Wednesday and 10 points Saturday against UCM, he has reached double figures eight times and he has led the team in scoring five times this year. His season high was 17 points against then-No. 17 Central Oklahoma. Williams ia third on the team with 18 steals. Williams leads the Ichabods with 14.4 points a game in five home games.
Byers moves up career blocking record chart
Junior forward
Paul Byers is tied for seventh in school history with 58 career blocks. He needs four more to move into a tie for sixth and eight more will get him into the top five. He had 17 blocks last year and in 2005-06, his freshman year, he had 31, the eighth highest single-season total at Washburn. Byers begins the year fifth in school history with 0.9 blocks a game. Byers has 10 blocks this year with a team season-high of three twice this year, the last coming Saturday against UCM. Along with three blocks, Byers had 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the year and second of his career.
In the last six games Byers is scoring 11.0 points off 64 percent shooting and he's pulling in 7.2 rebounds. In the three MIAA games he has 14.7 points, 9.3 rebounds and he's shooting 70 percent (19-28). Overall, Byers is scoring 9.6 points a game and leads the team shooting 65 percent from the field (51-79). His 6.2 rebounds a game is second best on the team.
Byers scored 16 points at Emporia State to tie his season high. He also had 16 at Missouri Western off 8 of 11 shooting. He had a career-high 12 rebounds last Saturday against Central Missouri.
Meile enters top 10 in career 3-pointers made
Senior guard
Andrew Meile has 119 3-pointers in his career, the eighth most in school history. He needs 30 more to catch Eric Carter, who had 149 from 1997-2001. He is also eighth in 3-point attempts with 306 and 10th in 3-point shooting percentage at 39 percent.
Meile is averaging 6.8 points a game this year off 47 percent shooting and he's 18 of 42 from 3-point range. He is third on the team with 36 assists.
Sisk scoring in double figures for Ichabods
Senior forward
Brady Sisk started his first two games of the year in the Ichabods' two wins at the St. Mary's Classic. Since then he missed the game at MWSU due to injury but returned off the bench the last two games. He led the team in the two games at St. Mary's with 14.5 points a game and 83 percent shooting (10 of 12). He also picked up 14 rebounds in the two games to lead the team. Sisk has reached double figures in scoring five times this year and 31 times in his career. His 30th double-figure scoring game came December 17 against Southeastern Oklahoma State.
He is scoring 10.0 points a game this year with 4.7 rebounds and he's second with 9.0 points a game off the bench.
Kyle Snyder leads Ichabods in rebounds
After limited playing time last year with an injury, senior
Kyle Snyder has played in every game this year and has started two at forward. He leads the team with 7.2 rebounds this year and is scoring 5.4 points a game off 47 percent shooting.
Snyder led the Ichabods with 10 rebounds Wednesday at Emporia State and he had a season-high 13 rebounds Saturday against UCM. He had his third career double-double on December 4 against then-No. 17 Central Oklahoma with 11 points and 11 rebounds. In his two games as a starter he is averaging 8.5 points and shooting 58 percent (7 of 12).
Darnell Kimble solid in the post for Ichabods
Junior forward
Darnell Kimble is fifth on the team with 8.6 points a game off 46 percent shooting. He leads the team shooting 79 percent from the free throw line (26-33) and has 11 blocks, a team high. Kimble has scored in double figures six times with a season-high 14 against Lincoln.
Grant Hargett provides solid play off the bench
Senior guard
Grant Hargett is Washburn's second-leading bench scorer with 101 points and he's averaging 8.4 per game. He's shooting 45 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3-point range. He scored 10 points at ESU and has reached double figures six times this year with a season-high of 12 coming three times.
Bods and Ends
• Washburn leads the MIAA in rebounding with 41.4 a game and is second with a +7.0 rebounding margin.

Andrew Meile leads the MIAA with a 2.40 assist/turnover ratio. He has 36 assists and 15 turnovers. Five times this year he has had four assists or more and five times he has gone without a turnover.

Mario Scott's 10 assists at Missouri Western is the highest individual total in the MIAA this year.
• The Ichabods are fourth in the MIAA with 10.4 steals a game. Last year they only averaged 5.6 steals.
• The Ichabods have reached the 100-point mark twice this year. In 2004-05 they scored 100 or more three times and in 2003-04 they did it five times.
• Washburn set a school and MIAA record last year with five overtime games. The Ichabods went 3-2 in the games, taking two of them to double overtime.
• The Ichabods are 31-24 all-time in overtimes with one win this year. Washburn is 6-7 all-time in 13 games that went into at least double-overtime.
Final notes on the Emporia State game
• In the 187th meeting between the two schools, ESU took a 94-93 lead in the all-time series. ESU has won five straight times in the series.
• Washburn tied a school-record with 15 3-pointers and shot a season-high 36 attempts. The Ichabods also made 15 3s on February 8, 1997 against Central Missouri. The 36 attempts is one less than the school record of 37 set on March 14, 1992 against Central Oklahoma.
• Emporia State's 92 points tied the total allowed to Kansas in the season opener, tying the highest allowed this year by Washburn.
• Angel Santiago reached double figures for the eighth straight time with 18 points and he made a season-high five 3-pointers.

Paul Byers tied his season high with 16 points. He also made a career-high four 3-pointers off five attempts. His previous high was two, accomplished eight times. Byers was 5 of 6 in the second half, scoring 13 points after getting just three in the first half.
• Washburn out-rebounded ESU 39-36, suffering its first loss when having more rebounds. The Ichabods are now 8-1 when getting more rebounds.
Ichabods on TV
Once again, Washburn's three home games against its three MIAA opponents from Kansas will be broadcast live on KTWU from Lee Arena. The first broadcast will be February 9 against Pittsburg State. The next will be the February 23 game against Emporia State and the final broadcast will be the February 27 game against Fort Hays State.
All three games are set for 7:30 p.m. tip offs and can be seen on channel 11 in Topeka and on K30AL, channel 30, in Iola, Kansas. KTWU is also available on various cable systems throughout the state including Cox Cable channel 8 in Topeka.
