Lekheythan Malone scored 24 points in his Washburn debut as the Ichabods won the first game of the Washburn Classic, 75-54 over Colorado Christian in their season opener at Lee Arena.
Washburn will now take on Central Methodist (5-0) Sunday at 3 p.m. in the final game of the Washburn Classic. The game will count as an exhibition for the Eagles.
Malone was 8-of-9 from the field and 5-of-5 from 3-point range. He also hit 3-of-4 free throws and led the team with nine rebounds.
Paul Byers was 4-of-9 from the field with a pair of 3s for 10 points and
DeAndre Eggins and
Logan Stutz each scored nine points.
The Ichabods shot 45 percent from the field while the Cougars shot 40 percent. WU held a 75-54 advantage on rebounds.
The two started out slowly as they began their seasons. CCU (0-1) was held scoreless until 13:18 when Peter Bailey hit a jumper. A dunk by CCU's Justin Neuhaus made the score 8-7, Washburn, and then another shot by Bailey later gave his team a 14-12 lead.
Byers answered right away with a 3-pointer and the Ichabods held the lead the rest of the game. They pushed it to nine on a lay-up from Malone with 3:30 left in the half and after CCU got as close as five
Jonathan Leopaul's dunk in the final minute gave WU a 33-25 lead at the half.
In the second half WU built its lead to 20 points on a lay-up from Malone at 14:04. The Cougars got as close as 11 points three times after that, the last at 6:07 with the score 63-52, but they scored just two more points down the stretch as Washburn put the game away.
Mario Scott led the team with three assists and
Darnell Kimble blocked a pair of shots.

Darnell Kimble at forward. The combination also started all three exhibitions.
• Washburn improved to 2-0 all-time against CCU. The last meeting was a 94-60 WU win on December 19, 1992.
• Head coach
Bob Chipman is now 27-3 in season openers and 22-1 in Lee Arena openers.
• Starting his 30th season at Washburn and overall as a head coach, Chipman now has the third highest winning percentage in NCAA II history among coaches with at least 30 years of experience. He is 647-251 with a .720 winning percentage. His win total is the sixth highest among 30-year coaches.
