Ichabods return home to revive rivalry with Nebraska-Omaha in MIAA opener
Washburn will return to Lee Arena Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. to host Nebraska-Omaha in both teams' MIAA opener. The Ichabods (3-2) are unbeaten at home this year while the Mavericks (4-0) are 2-0 on the road.
   
UNO is in its first year in the MIAA after playing in the North Central Conference previously. The Ichabods and Mavericks are playing each other for the first time since the 1986-87 season and before that the two played at least once a season every year from 1947-1974.
   
Washburn started the season with three straight wins at home. The Ichabods then went on the road and lost against Southwestern Oklahoma Friday and at Central Oklahoma Saturday in the UCO Thanksgiving Classic.
   
The Mavericks have not played since playing a pair of games November 21-22 at the Colorado State-Pueblo Classic, beating Western State and then CSUP.
   
DeAndre Eggins leads the Ichabods in scoring this year with 16.3 points a game while Lekheythan Malone is scoring 13.4 points a shooting 57 percent from the field and 42 percent from 3-point range. Michael Jenkins leads the Mavs with 16.3 points a game and he's shooting 66 percent from the field and 50 percent from long range.

Washburn beats Mavs in overtime en route to national title
December 6, 1986
Washburn won an overtime game against the Mavericks, 69-62. The game was the sixth of the season en route to a 35-4 record and the school's first and only NAIA national championship.

Nebraska-Omaha Series History
• This is the 49th meeting in school history and Washburn holds a 31-17 lead in the series.
• The two teams last met on December 6, 1986 in a 69-62 Washburn win in overtime. Prior to that, UNO had won three straight, all in the 1973-74 season.
• The two played at least once a year from 1947-48 through 1973-74,  a period of 27 straight years.
• The series began in 1933-34 and WU won the first nine meetings.
• The two have met in overtime twice with each team winning once.
• This will be the first time UNO has played at WU in Lee Arena.
• WU coach Bob Chipman is 1-0 against the Mavericks, having coached the last meeting between the two schools.

Ichabods fall to 6th-ranked Bronchos, Scott scores 18

Mario Scott led the team with 18 points and had nine assists but the Ichabods fell, 83-76 to No. 6 Central Oklahoma in the final game of the Bronchos OSSO Thanksgiving Classic Saturday night.
   
Scott was 5-of-13 from the field with two 3-pointers and he was 6-of-8 from the free throw line. Lekheythan Malone and Darnell Kimble had 13 points while James Williams had 11.
   
Washburn shot 44 percent from the field and 50 percent (11-of-22) from 3-point range. The Bronchos (7-0) were 46 percent overall and from 3-point range.
   
Kimble led the Ichabods with seven rebounds and he blocked three shots.
   
The Ichabods were out-rebounded 48-31 and Lance Harper led UCO with 23 points.

Chipman coached game No. 900 November 25

Head coach Bob Chipman coached his 900th game November 25 against Baker and he became the eighth coach to do so and win at least 600 games. Chipman is 649-253 (.720) in his 30th season with Washburn and overall as a coach.
   
Chipman is the second active MIAA coach to coach at least 900 games. Missouri Western's Tom Smith has coached over 940 games.

Ichabods get big results from DI transfers to start the year
Seniors Lekheythan Malone and DeAndre Eggins transferred this year from Arkansas-Little Rock and the two of them are each scoring in double figures this year.
   
Eggins missed the last two games for personal reasons but he leads the team in scoring with 16.3 points a game. He opened with nine points against CCU and then he led the team with 20 against CMU. He was 4-of-9 against the Eagles and 3-of-5 from the 3-point line. He also made 9-of-12 free throws that game. He had his second straight 20-plus scoring night with 20 against Baker as he was 6-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 from 3-point range.
   
Eggins is scoring 16.3 points a game through the first three games while shooting 45 percent from the field with a 59 percent effort from 3-point range.
   
Malone has reached double figures in four of the five games this year and he's scoring 14.8 points a game. Saturday at No. 6 Central Oklahoma he had 13 points and he was 8-for-9 in his Washburn debut and 5-for-5 from the 3-point line as he scored 24 points to lead the Ichabods against Colorado Christian on November 15 in the first day of the Washburn Classic. Malone missed his first shot against Colorado Christian and then made his next eight. He was 2-for-3 in the first half and then 6-for-6 in the second half. Tuesday against Baker he had 18 points and was 7-of-11 from the field.
   
Through five games he is averaging 14.8 points a game to lead the team and he's shooting 57 percent from the field and 42 percent from 3-point range.    

Scott throwing out a barrage of assists lately

Junior Mario Scott leads the MIAA in assists with 6.0 a game and last week he averaged 8.0 a game. Scott has started as WU's point guard in every game this year. In three games last week he averaged 8.0 assists, 13.7 points and 4.7 rebounds. He had nine assists and 18 points against No. 6 Central Oklahoma Saturday and Tuesday against Baker he had nine assists and just one turnover with eight points. He had six assists, eight rebounds and 15 points Friday against Southwestern Oklahoma. Scott totaled 24 assists during the week.
   
Scott is averaging 11.0 points a game this year with a 50 percent effort from the field. He's also pulling in 3.2 rebounds a game.
   
Scott's career high for assists is 10, reached last year at Missouri Western. He now has 11 career games with five or more assists.

Byers enters senior season fourth in blocks

Washburn senior forward Paul Byers enters his senior year fourth in school history with 71 career blocks. He is eight away from third and 29 away from tying former assistant coach Ewan Auguste for first in school history with 100.
   
Byers was second on the team last year as a junior with 20 blocks. He totalled 31 blocks in 2005-06, his freshman season, to lead the team and rank seventh in WU single-season history.
   
He had two blocks against Baker and he has three this year.
   
He's averaging 10.4 points a game this year and shooting 47 percent from 3-point range. He is averaging 5.4 rebounds.

Kimble remains strong in post position
Senior forward Darnell Kimble has nearly half, 10, of Washburn's 21 blocks this year. He's second in the MIAA with 2.0 a game.
   
Kimble set four career highs Friday against Southwestern Oklahoma in the UCO Thanksgiving Classic. He had 29 points, topping 20 for the first time in his WU career. He made 11 field goals with 17 attempts and he blocked four shots.
   
This year Kimble has started in the post every game and he's averaging 13.4 points a game, third on the team. He's reached double figures four out of five times this year and in the UCO Classic he had 42 points in the two games with 14 rebounds.
   
Kimble returns for his second year after finishing second on the team last year with 9.4 points a game. He led the team with 15 double-figure scoring games and scored a season-high 16 points three times. Kimble led Washburn with 21 blocks and averaged 0.75 per game. He played in 28 games with 16 starts as a junior last year after transferring from Brown Mackie CC.
    
About the Mavericks
Nebraska-Omaha is 4-0 but hasn't played since two games in the Colorado State-Pueblo Classic November 21 and 22. The Mavericks went 25-7 last year and finished tied for third in the North Central Conference with a 7-5 mark.  They won the final NCC tournament and then advanced to the second round of the NCAA North Central Region tournament.
   
This year the Mavs are led by Michael Jenkins with 16.3 points a game and a 66 percent field goal percentage. He's 84 percent from the free throw line and averaging 4.8 assists per game. Mitch Albers is scoring 14.3 points a game. UNO is out-scoring its opponents 90.0-63.8 and shooting 53 percent as a team, the second best percentage in the MIAA.

WU-UNO matchup notes
• Both teams are scoring 90 points a game. Washburn is second in the league at 90.4 and UNO is third at 90.0 this year.
• UNO is second in the MIAA with a +26.2 scoring margin.
• Both teams are in the top half of the league in 3-point shooting. UNO is shooting 44 percent and WU has a 41 percent average.
• Washburn leads the MIAA with 43.0 rebounds a game while UNO is seventh with 38.8 a game.

Final notes on the Central Oklahoma game

Mario Scott and James Williams started at guard for Washburn while Paul Byers, Lekheythan Malone and Darnell Kimble started in forward. This is the second straight time they have started as a group and they are 0-2.
• Washburn fell to 7-12 all-time against UCO and has lost four of the last five. UCO is now 2-2 against Washburn in Edmond.

Final notes on the Southwestern Oklahoma game

Mario Scott and James Williams started at guard for Washburn and Lekheythan Malone, Paul Byers and Darnell Kimble started at forward. This is the first time this combination has started for Washburn and the first start for Williams this year. The other four have started all four games.
• Washburn is now 1-1 against SWOSU. The first meeting was a WU win in1977-78.
• Kimble scored a career-high 29 points. His original career-high was 16 points, achieved three times last year. That is also a WU individual high this year.
• Byers also scored 21 points on February 25, 2006 at Central Missouri.
• Kimble had four blocks to set a career high. His original career-high for blocks was two, accomplished four times last year.
• Washburn is now 31-25 all-time in overtimes and this is the first overtime game against SWOSU.
• This is the first time Washburn has given up 100 points since UCO did it on December 19, 1998 in a 111-107 overtime win. That was a span of 292 games without allowing an opponent to score 100 points. Washburn is now 2-16 when allowing opponents 100 points all-time.
• This was the 11th time in school history the Ichabods scored at least 90 points and lost.

Coming up next
Washburn will stay home and continue MIAA play Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. game against No. 24 Northwest Missouri State. The Ichabods will then have a week off after that before a December 13 game at Truman.
