Washburn swept in doubleheader at Drury

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Ichabods pounded out 20 hits and scored 16 runs but suffered a sweep at Drury Saturday afternoon to end the three-game series. They lost the opener 9-5 and then played their second extra inning game in as many days, losing 12-11 in 11 innings. Washburn is now 1-2 while Drury is 7-4.

The Ichabods will return to Topeka hoping to finally play their home opener Tuesday in a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Rockhurst at Falley Field.


Game 1

Brian Gorges and Luis Beltran Lopez III each hit their first home runs but it wasn't enough as Washburn fell 9-5 to the Panthers in the opener.

Danny Cook suffered the loss as he allowed seven runs off eight hits through three innings. J.P. Verhulst pitched the final six innings and allowed a pair of runs off four hits.

Washburn fell behind 7-0 in the first four innings and didn't get on the scoreboard until Joe Hosey drove in two runs on a double and Brad Rogers scored on an error to make the score 7-3.

Drury got two of the runs back in the bottom of the fifth and then Washburn got one run in the sixth and one in the seventh off Lopez' and Gorges' home runs to round out the scoring. Gorges was 3 for 4 in the game.


Game 2

Washburn led twice but gave up a pair of runs in the sixth inning to allow the Panthers to tie the game and then Drury scored in the 11th on a leadoff home run to win 12-11 in the final game Saturday.

Andrew Miller pitched the final 4 1/3 innings for the Ichabods and, aside from an inherited runner in the sixth inning, he only allowed one runner past second base until the blast by Justin Skinner in the bottom of the 11th. He gave up the one run with two hits and four walks.

Brett Sorensen was 4 for 6 with four RBI and a homer. Nick Barnes led off the fourth inning with his third career home run and Cameron Kasel had a two-run double in the third inning.

The Ichabods were able to take the lead in the sixth inning on a two-run single from Sorensen before the Panthers tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
