Meile leads Ichabods to MIAA semifinal with first career double-double

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Ichabods shot 58 percent in the second half to turn a two-point halftime lead into a 79-68 win Friday night over Central Missouri in the first round of the MIAA Championship Tournament. Washburn, seeded sixth in the eight-team event, improved to 18-10 and will play Northwest Missouri State Saturday at 8:15 p.m. in a semifinal. The Bearcats are the No. 2 seed in the tournament.

Central Missouri was the No. 3 seed and ended its season 18-10.

Andrew Meile recorded his first career double-double in the 113th game in the last four years. He had 23 points and set a career high with 10 rebounds, including nine defensive boards. He was 4 of 6 in the first half and then 3 of 3 in the second half. He finished the night 7 of 9 and 5 of 7 from beyond the 3-point line. He had eight of his rebounds in the second half.

Darnell Kimble and James Williams also reached double figures for Washburn. Kimble was 6 of 11 from the field for 13 points and Williams hit three 3s and four field goals for 13 points after going without a field goal in the previous three games.

Kimble's layup at 10:13 in the second half gave Washburn a 10-point lead and then Williams' 3-pointer at 3:37 made it a 16-point Washburn lead at 70-54. With the double-digit lead late in the game the Ichabods got to the free throw line 11 times in the final 2:17 and made nine of them.

The Ichabods shot 48 percent in the game while UCM was 40 percent. WU was 11 of 25 (44 percent) from the 3-point line. Washburn won the rebound battle 40-30.

Joe Young led UCM with 26 points off 9-of-13 shooting.


Notes
• In the 82nd meeting between the two schools, Washburn tied the series record at 41-41.
• Once again Andrew Meile and Grant Hargett started at guard and Paul Byers, Kyle Snyder and Darnell Kimble started at forward. This is the sixth time this combination has started and the five are 5-1 when starting together. Meile and Byers have started every game this year and Meile has started 68 straight games. His last non-start was December 30, 2005, at Truman.
Andrew Meile had his first career double-double, 113 games into his four-year career. He had 23 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
• Washburn improved to 4-0 against UCM in the MIAA tournament. The Ichabods are 26-11 all-time in the tournament, 14-2 in first round games and 6-3 in Municipal Auditorium.
