Washburn scored just two runs off six hits as Fort Hays State swept the Ichabods, 4-2 and 9-0, Tuesday evening at Falley Field. The Ichabods (8-13, 5-9 MIAA) will wrap up a 10-game home stand with a four-game series with Pittsburg State starting with a game Friday at 9 p.m.

Game 1
Box Score

The Ichabods took a 2-0 lead in the first inning but were kept without a hit the final five innings as they lost the opener 4-2.

Wes Joy led off the bottom of the first with a single and then advanced to third on a double from Brian Gorges. Joe Hosey's grounder to first base drove Joy in and then Brett Sorensen drove in Gorges on a grounder to third base.

Washburn starter Danny Cook held FHSU scoreless the first four innings and allowed just two hits before the Tigers got three in the fifth off three hits and an error. They got one more in the sixth on an RBI double from Corey Gaudet to go up 4-2.

Tigers starter Eric Gilliland went the distance and pitched perfect 1-2-3 innings from the third inning through the seventh, retiring the final 16 batters. Nick Barnes' single in the second inning was Washburn's last base runner.

Game 2
Box Score

The Ichabods were held hitless until the sixth inning and the Tigers piled on nine runs off 10 hits as they swept the doubleheader with a 9-0 win in the final game.

The Tigers took advantage of five Washburn errors to score four runs in the third, two in the sixth and three in the eighth. Eight of the Tiger starters got hits, eight scored runs and five drove in runs.

Joy got a one-out single in the sixth to give the Ichabods their first hit and then Gorges followed with an infield single. FHSU then converted a double play to end Washburn's only threat of the game.

Mark Stoltz had WU's only other hit with a single in the seventh.

FHSU starter Kevin Large pitched seven innings and allowed the three hits with five strikeouts and a walk to earn the win. Curtis Hamilton started for the Ichabods and got the loss as he allowed six runs with a season-high eight strikeouts. Just two of the six runs were earned.
