EMPORIA, Kan. - Washburn jumped out to leads of 3-0 and and 5-1 before sixth-ranked Emporia State scored five unanswered runs for a 6-5 win in 10 innings Sunday. The loss ended the Ichabods' season at 17-29 and 12-24 in the MIAA.

Washburn loaded the bases in the third inning when Cameron Kasel singled, Tyler Blankenship doubled and then Calvin Iversen was hit by a pitch. Wes Joy then drove in the first run of the game with a single and then Joe Hosey walked in a run and Brian Gorges' grounder drove in another run.

Starting pitcher Danny Cook kept the Hornets scoreless until they got one in the sixth. WU got the run back in the seventh when Hosey doubled and scored on a single from Luis Beltran Lopez. The Ichabods scored again in the eight when Mark Stoltz pinch hit and led off with a home run to give them a 5-1 lead.

The Hornets then scored twice in the eighth and ninth to tie the game and then they won in the 10th on a two-out RBI single.

Cook went the first 7 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Curtis Hamilton entered with one out in the eight and was able to get the Ichabods out of the inning but he gave up the next three runs to earn the loss.


Notes
- Kasel led the Ichabods this year with a .350 batting average. This is the second year that a freshman led the team in hitting.
- Hamilton was Washburn's leader with a 4.03 ERA. The three earned runs he allowed Sunday to ESU were the first and only he allowed as a relief pitcher. He had a 1.05 ERA in 11 relief appearances and led the team with six saves.
- Brian Gorges finished the year tied for second at Washburn in single-season history with seven triples. Pat Colley set the school record with 14 in 2000.
- The Ichabods finished strong with a 6-4 record in their final 10 games, beating two ranked teams, and an 8-8 record in their final 16.
- Washburn finished eighth in the MIAA.
