Ashley Shepard had 14 kills and
Kate Hampson had her 28th career double-double as the fourth-ranked Lady Blues beat Nebraska-Omaha, 25-22, 25-21, 25-15, Wednesday night in front of 815 fans at Lee Arena. The win improved to Lady Blues to 14-1 overall and 3-1 in the MIAA while UNO fell to 6-8 and 2-2.
Washburn will next play at No. 15 Central Missouri Friday at 7 p.m. before returning home to play four matches in the Lady Blues Fall Classic October 3-4.
Shepard led the Lady Blues in kills for the fourth time this year and she hit .333 with two errors in 36 attacks. She was the only Lady Blue with double-figure kills as setter
Kate Hampson distributed the other 24 kills between seven players. Hampson finished with 34 assists and 11 digs for her first double-double of the year.
Mollie Lacy had six kills while
Jessica Wade had five with no errors in 11 attempts to hit .455 on the night. Washburn hit .254 as a team while UNO hit .165, led by Kayla Uhing with 13 kills and a .281 percentage.
The first two sets were played tight with 14 ties and seven lead changes. The Mavericks, playing their first season in the MIAA, led early in the first set, 12-7. Four UNO errors and kills from Shepard and
Breanna Lewis gave the Lady Blues a 13-12 lead and then after three more ties they took the lead for good.
A service ace from
Molly Smith stopped a late UNO run to give Washburn the opening-set win.
Neither team led by more than two points in the second set until two straight errors by UNO gave WU a 19-15 lead. The Mavs got within two at 23-21 before Lewis and Shepard closed out the set with kills.
After a 10-10 tie in the third set Washburn went on a 5-0 run to take control and then after a kill from Wade the Mavericks committed two straight errors to end the match.
Smith led the back row with 17 digs while
Monica Miesner had 14. Both teams had 60 each with UNO also putting three players in double figures. Washburn blocked seven shots with Wade leading with four of them.
Notes
• The Lady Blues evened the all-time series at 2-2 and has won the last two as they played as conference opponents for the first time in history.
• Washburn had 38 kills with just two coming from off the bench.
