TOPEKA, Kan. --- The Washburn Ichabods split a doubleheader with Bemidji State taking the first game 3-2 and falling in the nightcap 7-4. The teams are scheduled to continue the weekend series on Saturday with a single nine inning game beginning at 1:30 p.m.
Game 1 -- Washburn 3, Bemidji State 2
The Ichabods won their first game of the season after holding off a late charge by Bemidji State. The Ichabods scored the first run of the game after
Dane Simoneau doubled to left field scoring
Cameron Kasel who singled to lead off the inning. The Ichabods added two more in the fourth inning. Simoneau's triple scored Luis Beltran-Lopez who led off the inning with a double. Simoneau would then score on a sac fly by Cal Iverson. The Beavers scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth but did not get any closer as Washburn's
Andrew Miller (1-0) picked up the complete-game win. He struck out four batters scattering eight hits to go with the two earned runs. Kevin Morel (0-1) took the loss for the Beavers.
Game 2 -- BSU 7, Washburn 4
The Ichabods led 3-1 after three innings of play the Beavers rallied to score six runs in the next two frames taking the 7-4 win. In the third inning,
Brian Gorges doubled scoring
Wes Joy who reached on an error. Gorges would score later on a wild pitch. Luis Beltran-Lopez doubled to right scoring Simoneau who singled and then stole both second and third bases. Gorges finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Lopez, Vicente Vieyra and
Thomas Holiday each had two hits.
Brett Sorensen took the loss allowing three unearned runs.
