The Washburn Ichabods (15-11, 11-8 MIAA) will wrap up the regular season as they play host to Emporia State (16-9, 10-8 MIAA) in the second edition of the Turnkpike Tussle. It will also be the final home game for seniors Paul Byers, James Williams, Darnell Kimble, DeAndre Eggins and Lekheythan Malone.
Washburn sits in fourth place in the MIAA standings one game ahead of Emporia State in the conference race. After Wednesday's game, ESU has one more remaining against Fort Hays State. The Ichabods are trailing Fort Hays State for third place in the conference standings by one-half game. The Tigers enter this week with an 11-7 MIAA mark and play at Pittsburg State on Thursday.

Eggins tops 30 points but Ichabods fall at Emporia State

EMPORIA - DeAndre Eggins led all scorers with a career-high 31 points but the Ichabods let a 15-point second half lead slip away in an 85-75 loss at Emporia State.
Eggins was 11 of 23 from the field and he hit five 3-pointers. He also pulled in seven rebounds with three assists. Darnell Kimble, Lekheythan Malone and Covier Carter scored 10 points each.
The two teams started the second half tied, 41-41. Washburn opened with a 14-0 run to take a 55-41 lead at the 17:01 mark. The Ichabods then took their biggest lead, 15 points at 58-43 at the 15:41 mark. The Hornets then went on a 10-0 run to pull within five and then they took the lead, 65-64 with a 3-pointer at 9:29. Washburn led by two with three minutes left but the Ichabods were out-scored 16-4 the rest of the way.
Washburn shot 42 percent in the game while the Hornets shot 53 percent to become just the second team to shoot at least 50 percent against the Ichabods. Washburn was just 46 percent from the free throw line while ESU was 70 percent.
Washburn won the rebound battle, 37-34 but committed 13 turnovers while ESU gave the ball away 11 times.
Mario Scott led WU with five assists and Eggins led with two steals. Malone led with eight rebounds.
Dustin Andrews led the Hornets with 19 points and four others reached double figures.

Washburn vs Emporia State Series History
• This is the 190th meeting between these two schools with ESU holding a 95-94 lead. Washburn's win last year snapped a five-game winning streak for the Hornets in the series.
• This is the most-played series for Washburn. The two teams started the series in 1905-06, Washburn's first recorded year of basketball, and they have met every year since the 1945-46 season. This will be the 64th straight year they have played each other at least once.
• Washburn is 25-29 all-time in White Auditorium since home-away records were first kept beginning in 1956-57. ESU has won the last four meetings in Emporia and six of the last seven. Prior to that, Washburn was 14-2 in the last 16 away games.
• Washburn is 23-10 against ESU in MIAA games.

Ichabods hold off late Gorilla charge in win at Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods turned back a late-game rally by the Pittsburg State Gorillas taking an 80-69 win improving to 15-11 on the season and 11-8 in the MIAA.
The Ichabods led 39-24 at the break after holding the Gorillas to 9 of 25 shooting from the field while hitting 16 of 39 of their own shots for a 41 percent average. William McNeil sparked the 15-point halftime cushion scoring 10 points off the bench hitting both of the Ichabods 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes.
In the second half, the Gorillas slowly chipped into the Ichabod lead as the Gorillas' Spence Magana scored 21 points hitting five 3-pointers in the second half, including a long-range shot which cut the Ichabod lead to two at 62-60 with 6:36 to play. However it would be as close as the Gorillas would get as Washburn's Nate Daniels hit a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws sandwiching a set of charity tosses by James Williams pushing the Ichabods back to a nine point lead at 69-60 with 4:22 to go as Washburn held on for the 11-point win hitting their final five free throw attempts with Williams starting the streak converting a conventional 3-point play as the Gorillas had trimmed the margin back to six.
The Ichabods were led by DeAndre Eggins who scored 17 points on 7 of 9 shooting from the field to go along with eight rebounds and eight assists. Lekheythan Malone recorded a double double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. McNeil also finished with 13 points. Williams scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half and Darnell Kimble finished with 10 points.
The Ichabods hit 14 of 25 attempts in the second half (.560) and finished 30 of 64 for the game. The Ichabods dominated on the glass outrebounded the Gorillas 46 to 22 coming up with 19 offensive rebounds leading to 22 second change points. Washburn also outscored the Gorillas 36 to 12 in the paint and 27 to 10 in bench points.

Ichabods continue stellar play in Lee Arena
The Ichabods started the year 6-0 at home and have since gone 5-1 for an 11-1 record at home. Washburn is out-scoring opponents by an average of 83 to 70 in Lee Arena. The Ichabods shoot 48 percent at home compared to 40 percent in away games.

The Hornets are 16-9 this season while dropping two of their last three games with an 81-70 loss at SBU and a 77-71 loss at Missouri Southern. ESU topped Pittsburg State last time out 84-74. The Hornets are led by Lamar Wilbern who is averaging 15.4 ppg. He leads four other Hornets in double-figure scoring. Robert Moores is averaging 14.4 ppg, Jeremiah Box (10.6 ppg) and Tim Niles (10.0) are the other Hornets. ESU is 11-2 in home games and 5-7 on the road this season, including a 3-6 mark in MIAA road contests.

Coming up next
The MIAA's regular season will wrap up on Feb. 28, but the Ichabods will have an “off night” as the other 10 schools will play their final regular season games. The MIAA Postseason Tournament will start on March 5.
