BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods opening MIAA play with a pair of losses at Southwest Baptist dropping the first game in extra inning 3-2 before falling in the nightcap 6-4. The same two teams will be back in action on Saturday with another set of seven inning doubleheaders beginning at noon.
In the opener, Washburn took advantage of a lead-off walk by 
Travis Ice to start the game and he scored on a double by 
Wes Joy. 
Brett Sorensen hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Joy putting the Ichabods up 2-0 after their first at bat. However those would be the only runs the Ichabods would score as they stranded nine base runners the remainder of the game and the Bearcats scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Washburn was held to four hits in the game with 
Calvin Iversen picking up two to go along with Joy's double and another hit by Vicente Vieryra. 
Curtis Hamilton pitched six inning allowing one earned while striking out six with no walks.
In the second game, the Ichabods jumped on the Bearcats in the first inning as Sorensen again picked up a first inning RBI driving in Ice who led off the game with a single to center. The Bearcats came back and scored thiree runs in the bottom of the inning. Washburn scored solo runs in the second, third, fifth and seventh innings, but SBU held on for the win. Vieryra scored in the second inning off a sac by Iversen. In the third, Joy scored on a sac fly by 
Dane Simoneau. Joy scored again in the fifth on a sac fly by Sorensen and Simoneau drove in his second run of the game driving in 
Brian Gorges with a double. Washburn left eight runners on the base paths and pounded out 10 hits. 
Andrew Miller took the loss giving up five earned runs in three innings.
