TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn starters
Joel Ricketts and
Andrew Miller combined for 15 shutout innings in a doubleheader sweep of Northwest Missouri State on Saturday at Falley Field. The sweep completed the first four-game MIAA sweep for the Ichabods since a four-game sweep of Southwest Baptist in 2006.
In game one, Ricketts (4-1) tossed six shutout innings allowing five hits with four strikeouts in a 6-1 seven-inning win. The Ichabods (12-9, 6-4 MIAA) scored two unearned runs in the third to take the lead. Two errors by the NWMSU pitcher put runners at second and third with nobody out. A sacrifice fly from
Wes Joy and an RBI double from
Thomas Holiday gave Washburn the 2-0 lead.
The 'Bods tacked on four more runs in the sixth for a 6-0 lead. Luis Beltran Lopez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in the first run.
Cameron Kasel had a run-scoring single,
Calvin Iversen added a sacrifice fly and
Brian Clark had an RBI single to round out the scoring.
The Bearcats (9-14, 4-10 MIAA) scored one run in the top of the seventh to avoid the shutout, but WU cruised to the 6-1 win.
In game two,
Andrew Miller (2-2) tossed a gem. He went the distance allowing just four hits, while striking out a pair. He allowed just five base runners all game and no Bearcat reached second base.
The Ichabods scored two runs in the third on a double from Holiday. Washburn added three runs in the sixth for the 5-0 lead.
Brian Gorges had a bases-loaded single to score one and Holiday knocked in two more with a single to left.
