Washburn splits 4th consecutive MIAA doubleheader

PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues split their fourth straight MIAA doubleheader of the conference season at Pittsburg State falling in the first game 3-2 while coming back to win the second game 5-4. Washburn (17-24, 4-6 MIAA) will be in action at Missouri Southern on Saturday wrapping up the four-game road trip.

Game 1 - Pittsburg State 3, Washburn 2

The Gorillas jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three innings after taking advantage of a Washburn leading to an unearned run. In the fifth inning, Washburn tied the score on a two-run homer by Tish Williams, her 15th of the season, which scored Marissa Martin who led off the inning with a single to left. The Gorillas scored the inning run in the bottom of the seventh on a single by PSU wrapping up the game. Williams and Ashley Podschun each had two hits for the Lady Blues, who stranded six base runners.


Game 2 - Washburn 5, Pittsburg State 4
Washburn trailed 3-0 after five innings but scored all of its runs in the top of the six as they took a 5-4 win rallying for the split of the doubleheader. Williams singled to start the rally and Lindsey Himpel hit her second home run of the season. After a pitching change by PSU, Danie White doubled and Podschun singled scoring Roxanne Longoria to third after pinch running for White.
After a sac bunt by Maggie West, Katie Duncan singled to center scoring both Lindsey Moore, who singled and Podschun. The Gorillas added a run in the sixth, but went down in order in the seventh preserving the 5-4 win for Washburn. Megan Kimerer picked up the win improving to 3-0 on the season pitching 3 and 2/3 innings in relief. Farris picked up her first collegiate save after retiring the Gorillas in the seventh. Podschun had three hits in the nightcap and Himpel and Duncan each had 2 RBI.
