Washburn splits doubleheader with Central Missouri

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Ichabods split an MIAA doubleheader with Central Missouri on Saturday afternoon at Falley Field. Washburn cruised to a 9-1 victory in game one before the Mules broke open a tie game late for a 12-5 win in game two. The game one win by Washburn snapped a nine-game losing streak to UCM.

Washburn (16-19, 9-13 MIAA) exploded for four runs in the opening inning of game one. Cameron Kasel had a two-run single, Luis Beltran Lopez knocked in a run and another run came home on an error. The 'Bods were aided by two UCM errors in the inning as they scored all four runs with two outs.

Washburn added single runs in the second, third and sixth innings and plated a pair of runs in the fifth for the 9-1 win. Brett Sorensen had an RBI single in the second, Brian Clark drove in a run in the third, Calvin Iversen knocked in a pair in the fifth and Dane Simoneau had an RBI single in the sixth to pace the Ichabods. Kasel finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored to lead the offensive attack. Sorensen added three hits as well.

Dustin Holthaus (1-2) tossed a complete game four-hitter. He allowed one unearned run and struck out seven to earn his first win of the season.

The Mules (25-10, 16-8 MIAA) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game two with a run in the first and two in the third. The Ichabods plated two runs in the third on a Thomas Holiday double to pull to within one. After UCM scored one in the fifth Washburn tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles from Simoneau and Holiday. The go-ahead run was gunned down at the plate later in the inning and the game remained tied.

UCM erupted for five runs in the sixth to take a 9-4 lead. The Mules added a single run in the seventh and two in the ninth for the 12-5 win.

Danny Cook (3-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up eight runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings. Nick Phillips (4-0) picked up the win in relief for UCM with 2.2 innings of no-hit relief.
