PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Washburn split an MIAA doubleheader at Pittsburg State on Friday afternoon winning game one 12-1 before falling in the nightcap 9-6. The Ichabods smashed six extra-base hits, including three home runs in the opener.
Washburn (17-22, 10-16 MIAA) raced out of the gates plating three runs in each of the first two innings for a 6-0 lead.
Brett Sorensen followed up an RBI triple from
Wes Joy by smacking the Ichabods' first home run of the day in the first.
Calvin Iversen blasted a two-run shot in the second and
Thomas Holiday drew a bases-loaded walk to give WU a 6-0 lead. PSU (11-31, 8-20 MIAA) plated one run in the second, but WU blew the game open with single runs in the fifth and seventh innings and put up a four spot in the sixth. A
Brian Gorges three-run home run highlighted the offensive assault.
Curtis Hamilton (5-1) allowed just one run and scattered three hits to earn the win for the Ichabods.
Washburn jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in game two with single runs in the first and third innings, but Pittsburg State responded with eight unanswered runs to take the lead for good. The Ichabods rallied late with two runs in the sixth on a home run by
Cameron Kasel and two more in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as the Gorillas held on for the win.
Andrew Miller (2-4) allowed eight runs, only two of them earned, on eight hits in 4.2 innings and was tagged with the loss for Washburn.
