TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods split a non-conference doubleheader with Rockhurst on Tuesday afternoon at Falley Field. Washburn ralied to win game one 15-8 before falling 11-5 in the nightcap. Washburn will be back in action this Saturday and Sunday at Missouri Western.
The Ichabods (9-5) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game one on a bases-loaded walk by
Dane Simoneau and a two-run double off the bat of
Thomas Holiday. Rockhurst (10-8) rallied for two runs in the second and five in the third to take a 7-3 lead. Washburn cut the lead to 7-5 with two runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run double by
Blake Boling. WU broke the game open with eight runs in the fourth on RBIs from Holiday,
Brian Gomez,
Brian Clark,
Wes Joy, and a two-run single by
Andy Petz. The Ichabods tacked on two more in the fifth for the 15-8 win.
Holiday finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI, while Petz and Boling each knocked in a pair.
Raul Guevara (2-0) earned the win in relief after allowing two runs on three hits in 3.2 innings.
Xavier Lewis gave up six runs, four earned, on eight hits in 2.1 innings in the start.
Alex Seier (2-3) took the loss for the Hawks after allowing four runs on four hits in 0.2 innings of relief.
Rockhurst jumped out to a big lead in game two and held off the Ichabods 11-5. RU scored two in the first, one in the second, four in the third and one in the fourth for an 8-0 lead. Washburn got on the board with two in the fourth.
Travis Cruz scored on a wild pitch and
Matt Raabe added an RBI double. After the Hawks scored three in the fifth Washburn scored one in the bottom half of the inning.
The Ichabods plated two runs in the seventh on RBIs from
Travis Ice and Petz, but the comeback was too little too late.
Kalan Norton (0-1) took the loss for WU after allowing seven runs on four hits in 2.0 innings. Eric Humes (1-0) allowed two runs on two hits in four innings to earn the win for Rockhurst, while Ben Baker tossed three innings in relief for his first save of the season.
