March 16, 2010 - TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods split a non-conference doubleheader with Rockhurst on Tuesday afternoon at Falley Field. Washburn ralied to win game one 15-8 before falling 11-5 in the nightcap. Washburn will be back in action this Saturday and Sunday at Missouri Western.
The Ichabods (9-5) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game one on a bases-loaded walk by
Dane Simoneau and a two-run double off the bat of
Thomas Holiday. Rockhurst (10-8) rallied for two runs in the second and five in the third to take a 7-3 lead. Washburn cut the lead to 7-5 with two runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run double by
Blake Boling. WU broke the game open with eight runs in the fourth on RBIs from Holiday,
Brian Gomez,
Brian Clark,
Wes Joy, and a two-run single by
Andy Petz. The Ichabods tacked on two more in the fifth for the 15-8 win.
Holiday finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI, while Petz and Boling each knocked in a pair.
Raul Guevara (2-0) earned the win in relief after allowing two runs on three hits in 3.2 innings.
Xavier Lewis gave up six runs, four earned, on eight hits in 2.1 innings in the start.
Alex Seier (2-3) took the loss for the Hawks after allowing four runs on four hits in 0.2 innings of relief.
Rockhurst jumped out to a big lead in game two and held off the Ichabods 11-5. RU scored two in the first, one in the second, four in the third and one in the fourth for an 8-0 lead. Washburn got on the board with two in the fourth.
Travis Cruz scored on a wild pitch and
Matt Raabe added an RBI double. After the Hawks scored three in the fifth Washburn scored one in the bottom half of the inning.
The Ichabods plated two runs in the seventh on RBIs from
Travis Ice and Petz, but the comeback was too little too late.
Kalan Norton (0-1) took the loss for WU after allowing seven runs on four hits in 2.0 innings. Eric Humes (1-0) allowed two runs on two hits in four innings to earn the win for Rockhurst, while Ben Baker tossed three innings in relief for his first save of the season.
About Missouri Western
The Griffons are 9-8 overall and 4-8 in MIAA play entering the series after a two-game sweep of Upper Iowa in non-conference action. The Griffons have won two straight after being swept by Missouri Southern in a four-game series last weekend.
Ian Atkinson leads MWSU offensively with a .387 average. Missouri Western has seven players batting .300 or better, including Isaac Rome who is batting .315 with a team-high seven home runs and 17 RBI. The Griffons have hit 21 home runs as a team, while giving up 12.
Chris Sundvold has a team-low 2.12 ERA in three appearances, while Brandon Simmons and Blake Thomas each have two wins to lead the team. The Griffon pitching staff has an ERA of 5.81 allowing 104 runs (86 earned) in 133.1 innings of work. They have allowed 47 extra-base hits, including 12 home runs.
About Missouri Southern
The Lions enter the week with a 7-14 record, including 5-9 in conference play. MSSU has not played since sweeping a four-game series with Missouri Western last weekend.
Jacob Taylor leads the team with a .347 average collecting 25 hits in 72 at-bats. He also leads the team with four home runs and 15 runs batted in. Michael Zurmehly is hitting .409 in 11 games, but does not have enough plate appearances to qualify as the team leader.
CJ Maffei and Carter Lance have identical 2-3 records and Maffei leads the team with a 3.77 ERA, while Lance comes in at 4.64.
