MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods postseason hopes took a hit as they were swept by Northwest Missouri in an MIAA doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Bearcat Field. NWMSU took game one 4-2 and won the nightcap 10-7. The teams will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Ichabods (20-22, 17-19 MIAA) were scoreless in game one through 3.5 innings before the Bearcats (19-31, 17-19 MIAA) got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The 'Bods plated two runs in the top of the sixth to pull within one.
Brian Clark led off with a single and scored on
Thomas Holiday's double to left center. Holiday scored later on a
Matt Raabe single. NWMSU added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth for the 4-2 final.
Brett Ash (3-5) took the loss for Washburn after allowing four runs on six hits in six innings. Chris Green (8-4) earned the win for the Bearcats after giving up two runs on four hits in five plus innings. Jayson Huett pitched the sixth and seventh innings for his fifth save of the season.
The Bearcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game two with single runs in each of the first three innings. The Ichabods tied the game with three runs in the top of the fourth. Clark and Holiday led off the inning with singles before
Andy Petz belted his second home run of the season. Washburn scored a single run in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead.
Travis Cruz had an RBI double driving in
Brian Gomez. NWMSU regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning. WU cut the lead to 6-5 with a single run in the sixth.
The Bearcats extended their lead with four runs in the seventh to make it 10-5. The Ichabods rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth on a two-run double by Petz, but it wasn't enough as WU fell 10-7.
Daren Parker (1-4) took the loss for Washburn after giving up six runs on 10 hits in four innings.
Washburn is now in a tie with Northwest Missouri for fifth place in the MIAA at 17-19. The Ichabods must win both games tomorrow or hope that Missouri Southern loses at least three games to Southwest Baptist to reach the MIAA tournament. MSSU was leading SBU 3-0 in the fifth inning of the first game of the series before rains forced a delay.
