EMPORIA, Kan. – The Ichabods scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to tie the score at Emporia State but gave up two in the bottom of the inning to fall 9-7 Tuesday night in Washburn's first non-conference game of the year.

The Ichabods (7-6) will return home and play their home opener Friday at 4 p.m. at Falley Field when they start a four-game MIAA series with Fort Hays State.

The Ichabods entered the eighth inning down 7-3 after giving up three runs in the sixth and another in the seventh.
David Gauntt drove in
Wes Jones on a grounder and then
Connor Crimmins singled to drive in
Parker Gibson.
Kyle Carnahan then tied the score at 7-7 with a two-run single that scored Crimmins and Gauntt.

The Hornets answered with two runs in the eighth and then Washburn failed to get even in the ninth.

Dakota Kell produced Washburn's offense beyond the four-run eighth inning. He went 2 for 4 at the plate for Washburn with a two-run home run in the third and an RBI single in the seventh.

Carnahan and
Corey Gragg also each had two hits and Washburn ended up out-hitting the Hornets 10-7. The Hornets took advantage of seven walks while the Ichabods drew just two. Each team played error free.

Connor Brady made his first start of the season for Washburn and went the first five innings. He allowed three runs off just two hits and struck out three with four walks.
Ryne Dowling suffered the loss, his first decision of the year, as he pitched the final two innings and allowed ESU's last three runs.
