David Gauntt had a pair of RBI triples and
Mark Biesma and
Drew Ridley combined to pitch a shutout as Washburn opened its MIAA series with a 7-0 win Friday evening over Northwest Missouri at Falley Field.

Washburn improved to 11-12 overall and 11-10 in the MIAA while the Bearcats dropped to 15-11 and 10-8. The two teams will continue the series Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

David Gauntt drove in
Matt Jackson with a triple to right center in the second inning and then he hit one to the left center wall in the eighth to drive in
Parker Gibson. The two triples tied a school single-game record.

Biesma earned the win (2-3) as he gave up four hits through the first seven innings. He struck out five and walked two.
Drew Ridley gave up just a hit and a walk the final two innings in relief.

Gauntt later scored in the second inning on a sacrifice fly from
Kyle Carnahan and then Carnahan's single up the middle drove him in in the eighth.
Wes Jones started the three-run eighth inning with a single and then he scored after stealing second and then advancing on an error and a wild pitch.

Taylor Herrington gave Washburn a 4-0 lead when he homered in the fifth inning.
Payton Soicher scored on the hit to right field, Herrington's second home run of the year.

Soicher and Gauntt each batted 3 for 4 and Washburn got 11 hits while the Bearcats got just five.
